    From Corbett's Paro to Tadoba's Maya: Meet the celebrity tigers and tigresses that turned India's wildlife sanctuaries into global safari destinations

    India has the most wild tigers in the world than any other country on Earth. As per latest government data, nearly three out of every four wild tigers in the world live in Indian forests. The country is known for its population of Bengal tigers. But beyond the numbers, some individual tigers and tigresses have become legends/heros in their own right. These are one-of-a-kind wildlife attractions drawing wildlife photographers, researchers and filmmakers from across the globe. Some of these iconic big cats have also helped shape the identities of India’s tiger reserves and boost wildlife tourism in the region.On this note, let’s have a look at some of the country’s most famous celebrity tigers and tigresses that rule the forests.Paro: The queen of CorbettEvery tiger lover knows Paro, the queen of Corbett. Set in Uttarakhand, Corbett Tiger Reserve is India’s oldest national park and also the birthplace of Project Tiger. Paro was first recorded around 2013-14 and she soon became famous for establishing dominance over a large territory after displacing other resident tigresses.Machli: Ranthambore ki rani

    Machli (T-16), the queen of Ranthambore, is arguably the world’s most famous wild tigress. She was born in 1997 and got the name because of unique fish-shaped markings on her cheek. She ruled Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan for over 20 years. She hit global fame after an extraordinary fight wherein she killed a huge crocodile. Between 1999 and 2006, Machli gave birth to 11 cubs. She lived an extraordinary life till 19 years, which is much longer than the average lifespan of a wild tigress.Riddhi: Ranthambore’s modern star

    Riddhi is one of the most photographed tigresses of Ranthambore today. The tigress is known for her confidence around safari vehicles and is favourite among wildlife photographers. Calling her Ranthambore’s modern star won’t be incorrect. She proved that Ranthambore continues to produce tiger icons generation after generation.Rudra: The elusive king of SatpuraThe list won’t be complete with Rudra, the undisputed kind of Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. He is famous precisely because he is elusive. He is often spotted only through camera traps. Consider yourself lucky for spotting Rudra. His dominance has helped maintain ecological balance of the reserve.Maya: Tadoba’s queen

    Maya is famous as the “Queen of Tadoba” (Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra). She has earned a reputation for her fearless nature, memorable wars and remarkable visibility. Her appearance in the jungle is regular. She is every wildlife photographer’s dream.Collarwali: Supermom of PenchCollarwali (T-15) of Pench Tiger Reserve is also famous as ‘The Supermom’. She has given birth to 29 cubs which is another feat in the world of tigers. Originally radio-collared for scientific monitoring, hence the name. She played an important role in increasing the tiger population not only within Pench but also in surrounding forests and also starred in the acclaimed BBC documentary Spy in the Jungle. Collarwali left the world in 2022.Munna: The king of KanhaMunna is another legend who ruled Kanha National Park. He became famous for the distinctive stripe pattern on his forehead which resembled the word “CAT.” A number of photographers captured him because of his striking features. Today, many visitors still ask guides about Munna’s story.

    These still remain the undisputed kings and queens of Indian jungles enjoying celebrity status in their own accords. As India’s tiger numbers continue to recover, the next generation of legendary big cats is already roaming the country’s forests, waiting to write the wildlife chapters.
