Quote of the day by Neymar: "Messi is a great player. Playing against him is not good, it is…" - a candid lesson that teaches about competition, pressure and respect
Quote of the day by Neymar (AP photo)

The toughest opponents in sport are usually the ones who make winning genuinely hard. Neymar, the Brazilian forward, summed up exactly that feeling about his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi. “Messi is a great player,” he said. “Playing against him is not good, it is bad.” The line is funny on its surface, but it captures something real that plenty of elite athletes understand, that facing extraordinary talent is frustrating precisely because it forces you to be better. Coming from someone who spent years playing alongside Messi before eventually facing him as a genuine rival, the line carries a bit more weight than a simple throwaway joke.

“Messi is a great player. Playing against him is not good, it is bad”

Where this quote actually comes from

Neymar said this to Globo’s SporTV in July 2015, while discussing Brazil’s upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign. He was serving a ban from that year’s Copa América at the time, meaning he would miss Brazil’s opening qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela, and would only return to the side for the November match against Argentina, the exact fixture that would put him directly up against Messi. The quote was really a lighthearted way of admitting what that particular return match would actually involve.

What the quote is actually saying

Neymar is simply acknowledging how genuinely difficult it is to play against Messi. Calling him a “great player” recognises the obvious talent. Saying that facing him is “bad” is really pointing at the specific problems that talent creates for whichever team happens to be defending against it. The humour is what makes the line memorable, but it also captures a real principle in sport, that someone can compete fiercely against a rival while still genuinely respecting their ability.

Why facing a great opponent tends to make you better

Easy competition rarely exposes any real weakness. The toughest opponents force athletes to sharpen their speed, decision-making, technique and concentration, simply because anything less will not hold up against them. Facing someone clearly superior in a specific area tends to reveal exactly where improvement is actually needed, which is really why a difficult rival can end up functioning as an unexpected teacher.

Why recognising an opponent’s talent is not a weakness

Some competitors worry that praising a rival makes them look less confident. The opposite tends to be true. Recognising genuinely exceptional ability actually requires real honesty and self-awareness. Neymar has said elsewhere that facing Messi is “impossible to beat,” adding, “it’s a pleasure to pit myself against him and when I finish my career it’s something I can look back on and know I’ve tested myself against the very best.” None of that diminishes his own career. It simply acknowledges the scale of the challenge Messi represents.

Why competition and genuine respect can exist together

Sport runs on competition. Players want to win, defend their team and outperform whoever is standing across from them. None of that actually requires disrespect. The strongest competitors can play aggressively while still genuinely appreciating the skill and dedication sitting on the other side of the pitch.

What actually makes a player like Messi so difficult to face

Elite players combine several qualities at once that make them genuinely hard to contain. Technical ability lets them control the ball in impossibly tight spaces. Vision lets them spot an opening before defenders have even reacted to it. Sharp decision-making lets them choose the right option almost instantly. Consistency means opponents can never afford to lose concentration for even a moment. Put together, that combination is exactly what makes an elite player so difficult to actually stop.

Why genuine pressure tends to reveal character

Pressure shows how people actually respond once things get difficult. Some get frustrated. Others adapt. The strongest competitors study the actual challenge in front of them and look for a real way through it, a mentality that clearly reaches well beyond football.

Why this idea applies well beyond sport

The same principle shows up in careers and everyday life just as easily. A demanding colleague can genuinely push you to improve. A highly capable competitor can raise your own standards without you even noticing it happening. A difficult project can reveal skills you never realised you actually had. Rather than treating every challenge purely as an obstacle, it can just as easily become a real opportunity to grow.

    Other famous quotes by Neymar

    • “I just want to be better every day, to get better every day, not to be better than anyone else.”
    • “It’s impossible to beat him. It’s a pleasure to pit myself against him and when I finish my career it’s something I can look back on and know I’ve tested myself against the very best.”
    • “When we lose, we don’t have to change everything but correct things by working hard.”
    • “I am not the type of person who lets the pressure get to him. I try to see it as my friend.”
