Trump’s hair-do turns heads, has America all tangled up

Trump's hair-do turns heads, has America all tangled up
Donald Trump speaks at an event at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa in Las Vegas

TOI correspondent from Washington: Donald Trump has spent decades insisting that his hair doesn’t just embody style: it is a work of art, a triumph of nature over gravity, and often, an engineering feat involving a comb. This week, however, the 80-year old US President’s famous thinning thatch became the mane event of a national discourse.Trump appeared in Las Vegas on Wednesday with a hairstyle that looked noticeably brighter, fuller, and more voluminous than it had the previous day. It achieved new colors and dimensions over the next few days. Whether it was flattering LED lighting (the initial White House explanation), styling, extensions, or a wig, it generated some hair-raising and hair-splitting speculation as Americans briefly set aside arguments over the economy, foreign policy and immigration to ask: Hair today, gone tomorrow? The internet, where facts don’t stand a chance against jokes and memes, decided, “we can’t be LED up a garden path” and blew the bouffant to monstrous proportions. Within hours, social media was awash with AI-generated Trump sporting gigantic 1980s pompadours, wildly exaggerated wigs, tornado-shaped towers, flowing locks, and enough blonde volume to qualify for a wind advisory.Trump’s cabinet members were pulled into the net and given extravagant makeovers with locks and mops, buns and braids, as trolls went on a hairy-fairy excursion. “Make Big Hair Great Again” became an instant slogan. Another meme riffed on Phil Collins: “I can feel it coming in the hair tonight.” And, because no geopolitical crisis is complete without a bad pun, the Strait of Hormuz became the “Strait of Hairmuz,” and worse, “Strait of Hair Mousse.”The march of follicles was triggered in part because Trump himself has spent years supplying the punchlines. In 2011, he explained that he washes his hair with Head & Shoulders and lets it air-dry, insisting that his trademark style was not really a comb-over but something “a little bit forward and back” – which probably explains his tariff policy and war on Iran. His coiffure was not just hair – it became a glowing symbol of his brand, held together by sheer willpower, industrial-grade lacquer, and a refusal to let any strand part ways with the scalp. He also called his hair a “work of art” and described it as “perfect,” leaving comedians asking: does he ever have a bad hair day? There is something almost historically appropriate about Trump’s ongoing hair loom and doom. Presidents have been mocked for their clothes, voices, ears, eyebrows and facial expressions. But 45-47 has made himself more joke-ready than any president in American history because he has turned his own appearance, personality, and personal mythology into part of his political offensive. His grandiose claims, his demeaning nicknames for rivals, his obsession with television, his love of branding and his extraordinary pride and vanity in his own appearance have made him vulnerable to the oldest rule of comedy: Bigger the self-importance, more lethal the jokes. And perhaps that is the final lesson from the Great Trump Hair Fair of 2026. Presidents may control armies, nuclear arsenals and the global economy. They may command the attention of Congress, Wall Street, and foreign capitals. But no one – not even Donald Trump – can control a nation equipped with AI, Photoshop, social media, and an unlimited supply of hair puns.
