Meet Stephen Jalland: 57-year-old English handyman clearing gardens for free after one Facebook post sparked a wave of requests for help

Stephen Jalland, a 57-year-old handyman from March, Cambridgeshire, began clearing overgrown gardens for free in June 2026 after coming across a Facebook post about an untidy garden. What started as a one-off act of kindness quickly turned into a regular volunteer effort after his post showing the transformation attracted thousands of reactions and a flood of requests for help. Jalland now spends part of his free time helping people who may struggle to maintain their gardens because of age, illness, disability, mental health difficulties or financial problems. He initially planned to clear one garden a week, but demand soon pushed that figure closer to three. He says his aim is simple: to give people a cleaner, safer and happier outdoor space without expecting anything in return.

How did Stephen Jalland’s free garden-clearing effort begin?

The initiative started in June 2026 when Jalland was scrolling through a local Facebook community group and saw an anonymous post criticising an overgrown garden. He obtained the address and decided to visit the property himself, taking his tools and lawn mower with him. He cleared the grass without charging the resident. Jalland later learned that the man lived with his son, had health problems and could not afford the equipment needed to keep the garden under control. The job took about two hours, and Jalland returned the following week to work on the back garden. The resident reportedly made him a curry while he worked. Jalland then shared before-and-after photographs online, and the response encouraged him to continue helping others. The Facebook post showing the transformation quickly attracted significant attention. Jalland said it received around 40,000 likes, 5,000 comments and 600 shares. He also received about 1,000 direct messages from people asking him to help with gardens belonging to themselves, relatives, friends or neighbours. The scale of the response changed what had initially been a single act of kindness into a regular volunteer project. Jalland had originally intended to complete about one free garden clearance each week, but by August he was carrying out closer to three a week. Many of the requests came from people who were struggling to maintain their gardens because of circumstances beyond their control.

    Who does Jalland help?

Jalland focuses on people who may have difficulty looking after their gardens because of age, disability, illness, mental health problems or financial hardship. Some of the people he has helped have been unable to keep up with garden maintenance after becoming unwell or taking on caring responsibilities. One person he helped was Anita Thursby, a 54-year-old woman whose garden had become severely overgrown while she was dealing with cancer treatment. Jalland also cleared the garden of a housebound man where the vegetation had become so extensive that it blocked doors and created what he described as a potential fire hazard. In another case, he helped a mother with cancer create a safer outdoor space for her young daughter.

Why does Jalland believe the garden clearances matter?

For Jalland, the work is not simply about cutting grass or removing weeds. He believes an overgrown garden can become another source of stress for someone already dealing with difficult circumstances. Jalland has spoken publicly about his own experience with depression and says this has helped him understand how everyday problems can become overwhelming. At the same time, he does not claim that clearing a garden can solve mental health problems. Instead, he sees the work as a way of removing one practical source of worry and giving people an outdoor area they can use and enjoy. His message to people he helps is simple: “It’s not perfect, but it’s better.”

    The equipment he uses

Despite the scale of some of the gardens he tackles, Jalland does not describe himself as a professional gardener. His main occupation is as a handyman, and he has learned how to deal with heavily overgrown gardens through experience. He uses equipment including two trimmers, a rake, a broom and a small lawn mower that is around 30 years old. Some jobs can take several hours depending on the condition and size of the garden. One particularly demanding clearance reportedly took about seven hours. Jalland’s existing equipment has therefore become an important part of his ability to continue providing the service without charging the people he helps.

How is he funding the free garden work?

Jalland has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for replacement tools and supplies so he can continue clearing gardens for people who need help. The fundraiser, titled “Helping me to help others”, was launched in June 2026. He has explained that the donations are intended to support the practical costs of the work rather than turn the garden clearances into a conventional paid service. Jalland also continues to operate his paid handyman business, meaning the free garden work is something he carries out alongside his regular employment. He has said he hopes to continue the clearances even when his paid work becomes busier, potentially setting aside Saturdays for the volunteer effort.

    The public response

The response to Jalland’s work has extended well beyond the people whose gardens he has cleared. His social-media posts have attracted tens of thousands of reactions, while the large number of messages he received showed that many people were looking for practical help for relatives, friends and neighbours. His efforts have also received wider media attention, including coverage by The Guardian in August 2026. The publicity has helped bring more attention to his fundraising campaign and the idea of using practical skills to support people who might otherwise struggle to maintain their homes and gardens.

Stephen Jalland’s hope for the future

Jalland wants to continue providing free garden clearances while maintaining his paid handyman work. The growing number of requests means he cannot help everyone who contacts him, but he has continued prioritising people facing genuine difficulties. He has also expressed an interest in developing his social-media presence around the project and using donations to replace ageing equipment and cover the costs of future work. What began with one Facebook post and a single garden clearance has therefore developed into a continuing community effort. For Jalland, the goal remains straightforward: to use the practical skills he already has to make someone’s surroundings safer, more manageable and more pleasant.
