Gen Z turns down ₹1 crore job offer at 25 to avoid toxic workplace; LinkedIn reacts

A ₹1 crore salary package is the kind of offer that can make even a difficult job seem worth considering. But one 25-year-old reportedly chose to walk away from the opportunity after deciding that the workplace was not right for him.The decision has sparked a discussion on LinkedIn about how young professionals view money, workplace culture, and career choices. While a high salary can bring financial benefits, some people may also consider whether the work environment fits their priorities. The incident was shared by Bengaluru-based product designer Muskan Atar, who said her friend rejected the offer because he did not want to work in a toxic workplace.

25-year-old turns down ₹1 crore offer

Sharing the experience on LinkedIn, Atar wrote:“A friend of mine turned down a ₹1 Cr offer at the age of 25 to avoid working in a toxic workplace.”She said she had made similar choices herself but was struck by the clarity behind her friend’s decision at such a young age.“I have said no to similar opportunities, but I can’t imagine having this clear prioritization at the age of 25.”

Family and lifestyle can influence career decisions

Atar said that several factors could have led her to accept such an offer, including family responsibilities, social pressure, and personal goals.“Family responsibilities, peer pressure, and my own lifestyle aspirations would probably have made me take the offer. He comes from a similar background to mine, yet having the guts to let go of short-term incentives that don’t align with his long-term goals is a huge personality upgrade.”She also linked the incident to changing expectations among younger workers.“The next generation of the workforce knows what matters to them. Workplaces will have to learn to adapt to it.”

    Social media users weigh in

The post received varied reactions, with some users focusing on workplace conditions and others pointing to the importance of financial security. One person wrote:“Glad that people are getting aware of what mental health can lead to… be it good or bad… and yes, money is important. I always say I would choose money over everything, sometimes even job roles or working hours. But toxicity and a weird work environment are a big NO…!! This realization came after a decade of working in MNC and PSU, but at 25, it is commendable.”Another user joked about how difficult it would be for them to make the same choice.“The middle-class me in me will never be able to do that even at 45. So yeah, reroute those offers to me.”

    Financial freedom also matters

Another commenter argued that the ability to reject a high-paying job can depend on whether someone can manage without an income for some time.“If one can afford to go income-less for a while, then this is possible. This generation probably has that flexibility. Ours did not and still does not have that.”A fourth user praised the decision but also raised the issue of privilege.“Honestly, kudos to him, and right now it seems like he comes from a place of privilege because we all know how many people would actually kill for that offer! But yeah, it is great to know what you want very early on in life and have the ability/conditions/backing to be able to make that choice!”

    Money or workplace culture?

The reactions show that there is no single way to approach a major job decision. A ₹1 crore offer can be extremely attractive, but financial gain is not necessarily the only consideration. For some people, income and career opportunities may take priority. Others may give greater importance to the workplace they are entering. Personal responsibilities and financial circumstances can also affect what choices are realistic. In this case, the 25-year-old chose not to accept the offer because he did not want to work in a toxic environment. The decision has now opened a wider conversation about what young professionals value when choosing their next job.Disclaimer: The information in this article is based on social media posts and user-generated content.
