    The illusion of longing

It is an exceedingly common scenario encountered within the therapeutic space: a client laments the painful, lingering end of a past relationship, romantic or platonic, entirely convinced that their ongoing, obsessive grief is definitive proof of the other person’s irreplaceable nature. They endlessly dissect old text messages, replay decades-old memories like curated film loops, and experience a chronic, heavy sense of emotional yearning that impairs their current functioning. Yet, as the clinician begins to systematically unpack the actual history and structural dynamics of that relationship, a stark contradiction typically emerges. The bond was frequently volatile, emotionally unfulfilling, highly asymmetric, or outright toxic. Why, then, does the psyche continue to mourn a connection that was objectively detrimental to its health? The answer lies in a subtle psychological illusion: we often do not miss the actual person; we miss the specific version of ourselves that thrived when we were around them, says Dr. Sugami Ramesh, Senior Clinical Psychologist, Apollo Hospital Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore.Human beings are inherently relational creatures; our identities are not fixed, monolithic blocks but are dynamic, fluid structures constantly co-created in response to our relational environments. Every significant relationship acts as a unique psychological mirror. Some mirrors reflect our deepest insecurities, childhood wounds, and defensive postures, while others illuminate our wit, our intellect, our capacity for uninhibited joy, or our deep sense of emotional vulnerability. When a relationship ends, that specific mirror is shattered and the unique reflection of ourselves that was visible in it vanishes from our day-to-day reality at once, leaving us with the acute feeling of self-loss that can easily be mistaken for missing the ex-partner.

    The psychology of self-object functions

We can use the framework of Self Psychology founded by psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut to understand this phenomenon from a clinical perspective. Kohut believed that we often use other people in the outside world as “self-objects,” people who serve vital functions for our psyche that we can’t fully do ourselves or generate ourselves, such as affirming our baseline worth, soothing our internal anxieties, or making us feel incredibly alive and grounded. . Maybe you felt most comfortable and safe to be unedited, creative or naturally spontaneous in the company of a particular partner or friend. They were a psychological trigger, opening up parts of yourself that had been buried for years by family expectations or social conventions. When that relationship ends, the ego experiences a severe, rapid drop in its baseline vitality. The mind, searching for an immediate explanation for this sudden emotional deflation, makes a classic analytical error. It attributes the lost vitality entirely to the physical presence of the other person, rather than recognizing it as an internal capacity that the other person merely helped activate. The grief is not for the loss of the individual, but for the loss of the emotional access code to one’s own joy.

    Reclaiming the projective splinters

Healing from this specific type of relational grief requires a rigorous, conscious process of psychological reclamation. It involves helping the client understand that the precise attributes they miss – their laughter, their spontaneity, their confidence, your sense of unbridled adventure – were never properties owned or contained by their ex-partner. They were always yours; they were internal assets that you chose to manifest within that specific relational space. The other person was merely the venue, not the source. When a client shifts their focus from the external question of “How do I get that person back?” to the internal inquiry of “How do I cultivate an environment that invites that version of myself to return?”, true emotional liberation begins. This requires a deliberate, behavioral engagement with activities, new social circles, and personal boundaries that honor and invite those positive aspects of your personality to resurface. The ultimate goal of moving on is not to find someone who replicates your past partner, but to realize that you carry the capacity for your own vitality within your own skin, completely independent of whoever happens to be sitting across from you.
