The man who helped turn sports into a 24-hour television phenomenon is no more. How did Bill Rasmussen start ESPN?

In 1965, he joined WWLP-TV in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he spent eight years as sports director and later worked as news director and evening news anchor. He went on to become communications director for the New England Whalers hockey team in 1974.Then came the setback that changed everything. Rasmussen was fired by the Whalers at the end of the 1977-78 season.Soon afterwards, while stuck in traffic with his son Scott on Interstate 84 in Connecticut, the two began discussing the possibility of creating a television network devoted entirely to sports. Just over a year later, on September 7, 1979, ESPN went on air from Bristol, Connecticut, becoming the world’s first 24-hour sports television network.And they had to move remarkably fast.
