Did you know that by just paying ₹200, you can lease a small patch of diamond mine in Panna, Madhya Pradesh and can spend weeks digging through its soil. If you are lucky and discover a diamond or two, it could change your life forever! No, this is not a treasure-hunt fantasy but in Panna, it has happened many times.Let’s find out more about this:Panna, the ‘City of Diamonds’Panna is officially known as the “City of Diamonds”. The place is renowned for being India’s best diamond-bearing region. What makes Panna particularly unique is that alongside large-scale mining, the district has a long tradition of small, shallow, privately leased diamond plots worked by local people and artisanal miners.

Surprisingly low entry costSo one may ask how does a ₹200 diamond mine work?Well, the much-repeated ₹200 figure means the nominal fee linked with taking a small shallow-mine plot on lease through the district’s diamond administration. Recent reporting describes small plots measuring around 8×8 metres being leased for ₹200. Earlier official-linked reporting has similarly documented 64-square-metre shallow mines being awarded for ₹200 for a six-month period. But this clearly does not mean that people can simply buy a diamond mine for ₹200.It is important to understand that the ₹200 is only the beginning price. The miner has to obtain the lease through the prescribed process, arrange labour and equipment, excavate the plot and painstakingly sort the material. The work can involve removing layers of soil, breaking rock and sieving gravel. All this in the hope of finding a gem that could change your life.Legal stepThere is a major legal step which people must know; a diamond found during such mining has to be deposited with the government authorities. You just can’t go and quietly sell it off. Panna’s district administration regularly publishes notices for the auction of diamonds recovered from shallow mines.

What are the odds? The blunt answer is; Poor. However, the stories are real and extraordinary.Remarkable stories of diamond discoveryRaju Gond: Back in July 2024, Raju Gond discovered a 19.22-carat diamond. Raju was an ordinary laborer when he was working in a shallow mine in Krishna Kalyanpur. The stone was estimated at around ₹80 lakh or more before auction.

Swamidin Pal: Swamidin Pal, a farmer and labourer, found a 32.8-carat gem-quality diamond in a small leased plot near Sarkoha. Government officials estimated that it could fetch over ₹1 crore. It became the headline of Panna’s auction circuit.Anandilal Kushwaha: Anandilal Kushwaha found a 10.69-carat diamond in 2020. The estimated value was around ₹50 lakh at auction. The mine itself was reportedly a 64-square-metre plot leased for ₹200 for six months.Story of a Panna labourer: A labourer found a 15.34-carat diamond in late 2025 after leasing a small 6×6-metre plot for ₹200. It was estimated at around ₹45–50 lakh.Story of seven workers: In August 2026, some seven workers found a 17.96-carat gem-quality diamond at Sarkoha. The stone was exposed after rainfall. Its value was estimated at more than ₹50 lakh. How much does the miner receive? Now this is another thing people must know before jumping in. There’s a distinction between the value of a diamond and the money a miner finally receives. Diamonds from these mines are auctioned through the government process, and applicable royalty, taxes and other deductions can reduce the amount received by the person who found the stone.

The final value depends on the quality of the stone as well.It is because nothing is ever certain. It is labour-intensive work, and finding nothing is entirely possible. So the real investment is not the lease fee but the labour, time, tools, excavation and risk.Panna’s diamonds are not legally free-for-all finds. Diamonds recovered from shallow mines are required to enter the government process and are sold through official auctions. The Panna district administration continues to publish notices concerning the sale of diamonds obtained from shallow mines.
