‘IAS Singham’ Tukaram Mundhe is back in the spotlight: From a village school to 25 transfers, know his education and career journey
‘IAS Singham’ Tukaram Mundhe is back in the spotlight with his strict crackdown on food safety violations as Maharashtra FDA Commissioner. From studying at a Zilla Parishad school in Beed to securing AIR 20 in UPSC, his journey reflects a remarkable rise. With over two decades in administration and around 25 transfers, Mundhe remains a closely watched officer.

‘IAS Singham,’ as Maharashtra cadre officer Tukaram Mundhe is popularly described, has once again grabbed the spotlight for his no-nonsense approach to administration. As the Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Mundhe has launched a stringent crackdown on food safety violations, ordering inspections and action against establishments accused of flouting prescribed norms. His latest campaign has brought the officer back into public focus, but his reputation was built over much more than his current FDA posting. Mundhe has spent more than two decades in the civil services, during which he has earned a reputation for taking tough administrative decisions and has reportedly been transferred around 25 times.

Who is IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe?

Born on June 3, 1975, in Tadsona village of Maharashtra’s Beed district, Tukaram Mundhe began his education at a Zilla Parishad school. His journey from a rural school to the senior ranks of the Indian Administrative Service has made his career particularly notable. After completing his schooling in Beed, Mundhe moved to Aurangabad for higher education. He completed his bachelor’s degree in History and later pursued a master’s degree in Political Science from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad. His academic journey eventually led him to the UPSC Civil Services Examination, which he cleared in 2004 with an impressive All India Rank of 20.

    Cleared UPSC with AIR 20

Mundhe joined the Indian Administrative Service as a 2005-batch officer of the Maharashtra cadre. After his selection, he underwent training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, the premier training institution for civil servants in India. His pursuit of specialised training did not end there. In 2011, Mundhe completed a certificate course in Crisis, Emergency, and Disaster Management at the National University of Singapore.Over the years, he has handled several challenging administrative assignments across Maharashtra, developing the reputation of an officer who prefers action over prolonged deliberation.

Why is Tukaram Mundhe in the news now?

Mundhe was appointed Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Food and Drugs Administration in May 2026. The posting marked what reports described as his 25th transfer during a career spanning more than 21 years.Since taking charge, he has stepped up inspections of restaurants, food outlets, warehouses, and other establishments to check compliance with food safety regulations. The campaign has also extended to businesses operating in the rapidly expanding quick-commerce sector. The FDA’s aggressive enforcement drive has placed food safety firmly in the public conversation, with establishments facing notices and regulatory action over alleged violations.

From water conservation to food safety

Mundhe’s reputation for strict administration predates his current FDA assignment.During his tenure as Solapur Collector, he became associated with water conservation initiatives and efforts aimed at reducing the dependence of villages on water tankers. His administrative style and focus on implementation helped him gain recognition beyond Maharashtra’s bureaucracy. His career has repeatedly seen him take positions that have attracted both public attention and controversy. Surprise inspections, enforcement drives, and a visible presence on the ground have contributed to his image as an officer who does not shy away from difficult decisions.

Why has he been transferred so many times?

Perhaps the most talked-about aspect of Mundhe’s career is his transfer record.According to reports, he has been transferred around 25 times in just over two decades of service. That frequency has made his name synonymous with one of the most enduring debates in Indian administration, the frequent transfer of officers who take an assertive approach to governance. While supporters see his transfer history as a sign of an officer unwilling to compromise, his critics have questioned whether his style sometimes creates friction with the existing administrative system.Nevertheless, the repeated transfers have done little to diminish his public profile. If anything, they have strengthened the perception of Mundhe as an officer who has built his identity around enforcement and accountability.

A journey that began in a village school

The story of Tukaram Mundhe stands out because of the distance between where his journey began and where it has taken him. From studying in a Zilla Parishad school in a village in Beed to securing an AIR 20 in one of India’s toughest competitive examinations, Mundhe went on to become a senior IAS officer whose postings and decisions regularly attract public attention. Now, as Maharashtra FDA Commissioner, he is once again under the spotlight. His food safety crackdown may be his latest high-profile assignment, but the story of ‘IAS Singham’ is ultimately one of a rural student who entered the civil services and went on to build one of Maharashtra’s most recognisable administrative careers.
