Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage edged out Neeraj Chopra by just nine centimetres in Lausanne, securing his third victory over the Indian star this season and tightening his grip on one of the sport’s most compelling emerging rivalries. For a brief moment on Friday night, it looked as though Chopra had finally found a way past the man who had beaten him in Doha and again at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Indian moved into the lead with a huge second-round throw and produced his trademark roar in celebration. But Pathirage had another answer. The Sri Lankan responded with an 88.14m effort in the third round and held on through the remainder of the competition to claim victory at the Lausanne Diamond League. Chopra finished second with 88.05m, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters took third place with a season-best 86.69m.The margin between first and second was just nine centimetres.

Pathirage completes another victory over Chopra

The result continues a remarkable season for Pathirage, who has now defeated Chopra in all three of their meetings in 2026.Their first clash came at the Doha Diamond League in June, where Pathirage threw 88.68m to finish ahead of Chopra. The Sri Lankan then claimed Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow, with Chopra taking silver.Lausanne presented Chopra with another opportunity to reverse that trend, and for much of the evening he remained firmly in contention.Instead, Pathirage once again found a way to stay in front when it mattered most.

    How the competition unfolded

Chopra opened his night with a throw of 83.54m, immediately placing himself among the contenders but still behind Pathirage after the opening round. The competition changed dramatically in the second round.Launching his javelin beyond the 88-metre mark, Chopra produced 88.05m, surging into first place and briefly taking control of the event. The reaction was immediate, with the Indian celebrating what appeared to be a potentially winning throw. That lead, however, lasted only one round.Pathirage responded in the third attempt with 88.14m, moving back into first place and reclaiming control of the competition. Chopra answered with 83.72m in his third throw but could not improve on his second-round mark. The pressure increased as the competition moved into its closing stages.Chopra recorded a foul in the fourth round, reducing his opportunities to regain the lead. In the fifth round, he elected to pass, while Pathirage fouled, leaving the standings unchanged heading into the final attempts.Everything therefore came down to the sixth and final round.Neeraj needed one last improvement to overtake Pathirage, but his final throw travelled only a little over 82 metres, leaving the Sri Lankan free to celebrate another Diamond League victory.

    Strong showing from Anderson Peters

While the battle for victory centred on Chopra and Pathirage, Anderson Peters quietly produced one of his best performances of the season. The Grenadian finished third with 86.69m, a season-best effort that kept him comfortably inside the top three throughout the evening.Former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott placed fourth with 83.71m, while Marc Anthony Minichello rounded out the top five with 80.06m.

    Men’s javelin final standings

    1. Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage (Sri Lanka) — 88.14m
    2. Neeraj Chopra (India) — 88.05m
    3. Anderson Peters (Grenada) — 86.69m
    4. Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago) — 83.71m
    5. Marc Anthony Minichello (USA) — 80.06m
    6. Curtis Thompson (USA) — 78.13m
    7. Jakub Vadlejch (Czech Republic) — 77.32m
    8. Artur Felfner (Ukraine) — 74.84m
    9. Simon Wieland (Switzerland) — 73.23m

Important points gained in the race for the Diamond League Final

Although Chopra narrowly missed out on victory, the result could still prove significant for his Diamond League campaign. The Lausanne meeting carried extra importance because Chopra entered the event seventh in the season standings with five points and had not yet secured qualification for the Diamond League Final.Only the top six javelin throwers automatically qualify for the season-ending final, while any additional places depend on wildcard selections. His runner-up finish in Lausanne therefore delivers a valuable points boost ahead of the final qualifying event in Zurich, keeping him firmly in the race for a place at the Diamond League Final. The victory belonged to Pathirage once again, but Chopra leaves Switzerland with another throw beyond 88 metres and a stronger position in the qualification battle. The rivalry between the two has now produced three meetings this season, and all three have gone the Sri Lankan’s way. The gap this time was the smallest yet — just nine centimetres.
