TCS denies employee laptop surveillance reports after monitoring tool claims spark workplace privacy concerns
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has reportedly introduced a Digital User Experience Monitoring tool on company-issued laptops, sparking debate over workplace privacy and surveillance. The technology can reportedly track application usage and time spent on devices. While such tools can strengthen cybersecurity, concerns remain over data collection, employee monitoring, access controls and transparency surrounding their use.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reportedly deployed a Digital User Experience Monitoring tool on company-issued laptops, triggering questions over whether the technology could be used to monitor employees’ activities. The company has now rejected those reports, calling them “baseless and inaccurate” and stating that it does not track individual employee activity on laptops. The development comes after reports claimed that the monitoring tool could provide visibility into applications accessed on employees’ laptops and the time spent on them. This raised concerns over whether the technology was being used for cybersecurity, network management or monitoring individual work patterns.TCS has now clarified that the tools are intended for a broader technical purpose and are not designed to surveil employees.

Reports of laptop monitoring trigger workplace surveillance concerns

The initial reports about the deployment of the Digital User Experience Monitoring tool raised questions about how companies use technology to oversee corporate devices.Such tools are increasingly used by organisations to assess the performance of their IT infrastructure, identify technical issues, strengthen security and improve digital services. However, when monitoring software is installed directly on employee devices, concerns can arise over whether it can also capture information about individual users. In the case of TCS, reports suggested that the tool could offer visibility into application usage and the amount of time spent on different applications. That led to a broader question: was the technology intended to monitor the health of TCS’ digital infrastructure, or could it also be used to track individual employee behaviour?

TCS calls surveillance reports ‘baseless and inaccurate’

TCS has now categorically denied that it is using the technology to surveil its employees. In a statement, the company said: “The reports regarding surveillance of employees are baseless and inaccurate. TCS does not track individual employee activity on laptops and respects their privacy.”The company said the tools are used to monitor macro-level network performance rather than the activities of individual employees.According to TCS, the purpose is to ensure network security and availability while providing employees with an improved digital experience. The clarification therefore draws a distinction between monitoring the company’s technology infrastructure and monitoring the people using it.

A wider debate over workplace monitoring

The episode comes against the backdrop of a wider discussion about digital monitoring at workplaces. As companies increasingly depend on laptops, cloud applications, remote-access systems and digital communication, monitoring the performance and security of these systems has become a routine part of IT management. At the same time, employees are becoming more conscious of the amount of information that workplace technologies can potentially collect. That makes transparency particularly important. Employees need to understand whether a tool is monitoring network health, collecting aggregated technical information or recording individual behaviour. In TCS’ case, the company has now said that the technology is used at a macro level and that individual employee activity is not being tracked.
