Who is Lindsay Clancy? All about the Massachusetts mother at the centre of a shocking murder trial

Lindsay Clancy was once a labour and delivery nurse, a wife and a mother of three living in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Today, she is at the centre of a deeply disturbing murder trial over the deaths of her three young children.Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to three murder charges. She has admitted killing her children, but her defence says she was in the grip of severe mental illness, including postpartum psychosis, at the time. Prosecutors, however, argue that she knew what she was doing and deliberately killed the children.

    What happened to her children?

On January 24, 2023, Clancy strangled her three children at the family’s home in Duxbury, according to evidence presented in court. Her children – Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, just 8 months old – were later found in the basement. After the killings, Clancy jumped from a second-storey window in an apparent suicide attempt. She survived but was left paralysed from the waist down. The case shocked the country, but it also raised difficult questions about postpartum mental illness and how severe psychiatric problems can affect new mothers.

    Who is Lindsay Clancy?

Before the killings, Clancy worked as a labour and delivery nurse. She was married to Patrick Clancy, and the couple had three children together.According to testimony in the trial, Clancy’s mental health had become increasingly difficult in the months before her children’s deaths. Her family and medical providers described her struggling with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and intrusive thoughts after the birth of her youngest child. One psychiatric nurse practitioner who treated her testified that Clancy had messaged her about having intrusive thoughts she had never experienced before, feeling “completely hopeless” and worrying about her medication.

Why is postpartum psychosis such a big part of the case?

This is where the trial gets complicated.Clancy’s defence argues that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and that her mental state was so severely disturbed that she couldn’t properly understand what she was doing or control her actions. Her lawyers have presented testimony about her worsening mental health, while experts have discussed her medications, suicidal thoughts and reported experiences with hallucinations. At one point, Clancy reportedly told her husband that she had heard a man’s voice telling her to kill the children and then herself. But prosecutors have challenged that version of events. They have argued that Clancy was depressed and struggling, but that she wasn’t experiencing psychosis at the time of the killings. Doctors who treated her also testified that they had not seen signs of mania or psychosis during their sessions with her.Prosecutors have also pointed to online searches Clancy made about depression, suicidal thoughts and symptoms of postpartum psychosis shortly before the killings.

Where does the trial stand now?

The trial is now in its final stretch. The defence rested its case on August 21 after several days of testimony focused on Clancy’s mental state. Prosecutors have since started presenting rebuttal witnesses, with closing arguments expected next week.Clancy has also become visibly emotional during the proceedings. She broke down crying while doctors testified about the autopsies of her children, prompting the judge to temporarily excuse the jury during parts of the testimony. And that’s what has made the case so difficult to follow emotionally. There is no dispute that three children died. The question before the jury is what was happening inside their mother’s mind when it happened – and whether her mental illness means she should be held criminally responsible. That decision now rests with the jury.
