Harsh Goenka: 11,123 Ahmedabad restaurants asked to show live kitchen footage: Impressed Harsh Goenka asks, ‘Time to take this pan-India?’

11,123 Ahmedabad restaurants asked to show live kitchen footage: Impressed Harsh Goenka asks, ‘Time to take this pan-India?’

Would you want to see what’s happening inside a restaurant kitchen before your food lands on your table?Ahmedabad may soon make that possible. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has asked 11,123 restaurants and food businesses to install CCTV cameras in their kitchens and display the live footage on screens that customers can see. The idea is pretty simple: let diners see how their food is being prepared and, hopefully, push restaurants to take hygiene more seriously.Industrialist Harsh Goenka has now backed the move, asking whether it should be introduced across India.

    ‘Time to take this pan-India?’

Sharing the Ahmedabad initiative on X, Goenka pointed out that thousands of restaurants and food businesses have been asked to install cameras and show the live kitchen feed to customers. His take was short and to the point: “Transparency may just be the best hygiene inspector. Time to take this pan-India?”And that question sparked quite a discussion. The move comes as Ahmedabad’s civic authorities step up food safety checks. Action has reportedly been taken against businesses over issues including insect-infested flour, adulterated food products and poor hygiene. In serious cases, businesses could even face cancellation of their licences. So the thinking behind the CCTV rule is that if customers can actually see what’s happening in the kitchen, restaurants may have another reason to keep things clean.

People seem to like the idea – with a few reservations

A number of people responding to Goenka’s post supported the proposal. One person suggested that kitchen CCTV should become mandatory across the country, arguing that food safety inspections aren’t something customers regularly get to see. Another had an even simpler suggestion: why not have more open kitchens where diners can watch their food being prepared anyway? Some commenters went further, calling for stricter action against food adulteration and stale food. Others said restaurants need better supply-chain checks and proper hygiene training for staff. But not everyone was convinced. One concern was the cost. Installing cameras, maintaining them and setting up screens could become an added expense for restaurants – and some people worried that businesses might eventually pass that cost on to customers through higher prices. Then came the slightly uncomfortable question: Do we actually want to watch the kitchen while we’re eating? One commenter joked that seeing the kitchen in action could be a “sure fire way to douse those digestive juices”. After all, even a perfectly hygienic commercial kitchen can look chaotic during a busy lunch or dinner service.

Would CCTV really change restaurant hygiene?

That’s where the debate gets interesting.A camera can show customers what’s happening, but it doesn’t automatically guarantee that everything being served is safe. Storage, food quality, ingredient sourcing and cleanliness outside the camera’s view still matter. Some commenters also pointed to roadside food stalls, with one person saying they sometimes trust small food stalls in Hyderabad more than restaurants despite their very different setups. The broader point, however, was fairly clear: basic food hygiene shouldn’t become a luxury feature that customers have to pay extra for.Whether Ahmedabad’s experiment works well enough to be adopted elsewhere remains to be seen. But Goenka’s question has certainly started a conversation about something most diners rarely get to see – what really happens in the kitchen after they place their order.
