7 mistakes to avoid at any hotel buffet
7 mistakes to avoid at any hotel buffet

A hotel buffet is one of those places where your eyes usually eat first. You spot the dosa counter, then the pastries, then the fresh fruit, and suddenly your plate is carrying far more than you could possibly finish. But beyond overeating, there are a few buffet habits that are genuinely worth avoiding. They are less about having perfect table manners and more about hygiene, food safety, and making sensible choices when dozens of people are being served from the same spread. Here are the ones that actually matter.

    1. Do not start eating before checking the entire spread

It is easy to fill your plate with the first few things you see and then discover something better at the other end.Take a quick look at the entire buffet first. This is especially useful at large hotel breakfasts, where there may be separate counters for hot food, breads, fruit, beverages, and made-to-order dishes. You are less likely to overfill your plate and waste food when you know what is actually available.

    2. Do not take food that you know you will not finish

A buffet encourages experimentation, but that does not mean taking a full portion of every unfamiliar dish.Start with a reasonable amount. If you like something, you can always return for more. This is particularly useful with rich breakfast items, desserts, and dishes you have never tried before. It is a simple way to avoid both food waste and the post-buffet regret of having eaten far more than you intended.

    3. Never use your personal spoon or fork to serve food

This is one of the most important buffet habits.Use the serving spoon, tongs, or ladle provided for each dish. Do not taste something with your own cutlery and then put it back into a shared dish. The same rule applies to moving serving utensils from one container to another. Shared food needs shared serving tools that stay with that particular dish.

    4. Do not touch food you are not taking

At a buffet, it can be tempting to move pieces around while deciding what you want.Avoid picking up bread, fruit, pastries, or other ready-to-eat items and putting them back. Use the provided tongs or serving utensils instead. It keeps the food cleaner for the next person and is especially important at busy breakfast buffets where many guests are serving themselves.

    5. Be careful with foods that are sensitive to temperature

Not every buffet item needs the same treatment.Hot dishes should be served from appropriate heated containers, while foods that need to remain chilled should be kept cold. Be more cautious with items such as dairy-based dishes, seafood, meat, and other perishable foods if they appear to have been sitting at an unsuitable temperature. If something looks poorly maintained, unusually warm, or otherwise questionable, there are plenty of other options on the buffet. Skip it.

    6. Do not leave your used plate in the serving area

Once you have finished eating, leave your used plate at your table or in the designated area rather than carrying it back to the buffet for another serving.Use a fresh plate for your next round. This keeps the serving area cleaner and prevents used cutlery or leftover food from coming into contact with the buffet setup.

    7. Do not assume “unlimited” means you need to keep eating

This may be the most useful rule of all.The buffet price covers access to the food. It does not mean you have to sample every dish.Choose what you genuinely want, enjoy it, and go back for seconds if you are still hungry. Eating past the point of comfort simply because the food is available can turn a good breakfast or dinner into an uncomfortable afternoon.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
