The world’s highest-ranking penguin, Major General Sir Nils Olav III, Baron of Bouvet Island, is set to become a father after his new partner, Connie, laid an egg at Edinburgh Zoo. The surprise arrival came in the early hours of Friday, August 14, with keepers admitting they had not expected the pair to produce an egg until 2027 at the earliest. The egg marks the first king penguin egg recorded at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland in 17 years.Edinburgh Zoo also announced the news on Instagram, sharing an enthusiastic post that read, “EGGCITING NEWS FROM PENGUINS ROCK 🥚 King penguin Connie has laid an egg… and none other than Major General Sir Nils Olav is the dad🎖️🐧 As if that’s not exciting enough, this is the first king penguin egg to be laid at Edinburgh Zoo in 17 years! Visitors may spot Connie and Nils tucked up in a quiet corner, caring for the egg. We’re keeping everything crossed for these first-time parents.”

Connie arrived at the zoo in January along with two other female king penguins. According to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), Sir Nils wasted little time winning her over.Speaking to SWNS, Darren McGarry, head of animal care at RZSS, described the discovery as a “lovely surprise” and said keepers had expected the newcomers to need time to settle in.“But Sir Nils made short work of charming Connie. She clearly is a fan of his military status,” McGarry said.Pictures shared by Edinburgh Zoo show Connie and Sir Nils tucked away in a quiet corner as they protect their precious egg. The egg can only be seen when the penguins move it between them.

Penguin parents take turns keeping egg warm

King penguins typically lay a single egg, which takes around 55 days to hatch. Rather than building a traditional nest, the parents keep the egg on their feet and take turns caring for it and keeping it warm.Michael Livingstone, senior keeper at RZSS, said the zoo is excited about the pair becoming parents but will closely monitor them because both are inexperienced.“We could not be more excited for Connie and Sir Nils,” Livingstone said.“They are inexperienced parents-to-be so we will keep a close eye on them. Their instincts are strong and we are cautiously optimistic but there is a long way to go.”

Sir Nils has a long military career

Sir Nils is not an ordinary penguin. He serves as the mascot and colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King’s Guard, with the name “Nils Olav” and his military ranks having been passed down through three king penguins since 1972.He was promoted to brigadier on August 22, 2016, during a ceremony attended by more than 50 members of the Norwegian King’s Guard. On August 21, 2023, he received another promotion, becoming a major general.Guinness World Records recognises Sir Nils Olav III as the world’s highest-ranking penguin. Now, after years of military honours, the decorated king penguin faces perhaps his most important assignment yet – becoming a father.
