The Delhi government has asked all government and private schools to step up preventive measures against seasonal influenza, including H1N1, while making it clear that there is no need for panic.The Directorate of Education (DoE) has advised schools to follow a “Healthy School-Healthy Community” approach and strengthen awareness around respiratory hygiene, handwashing and other precautions among students and staff.The advisory comes as seasonal illnesses, including influenza, are seen during this time of the year. Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said the focus should remain on preparedness and timely preventive action rather than alarm.“There is no need for panic. There is no emergency situation in Delhi or in the country. Seasonal illnesses, including influenza, are seen during this period of the year. Our focus is on preparedness, awareness and timely preventive action,” Sood said.“I urge citizens to remain calm, vigilant and follow the health advisory issued by the authorities,” he added.
What Delhi schools have been asked to do
The DoE advisory lists sore throat, cough, difficulty in breathing, body ache, headache, fatigue, chills and fever among symptoms that may be associated with seasonal influenza or H1N1.Schools have been asked to ensure that students and staff are aware of these symptoms and follow basic precautions to reduce the risk of infection.Students and staff should cover their nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing and dispose of used tissues properly. Schools have also been advised to promote regular handwashing with soap and water, particularly before eating and after coughing or sneezing.The advisory also asks schools to maintain appropriate distance from people showing respiratory symptoms. Masks may be used wherever considered necessary.Classrooms, common areas and frequently touched surfaces should be cleaned regularly. Schools have also been told to ensure adequate ventilation wherever feasible.
Schools asked to discourage self-medication
The advisory also places emphasis on everyday health habits. Schools have been asked to create awareness against spitting on school premises and in public places and encourage students to stay hydrated, eat nutritious food, get sufficient rest and maintain personal hygiene.Students and staff have been advised to avoid frequently touching their eyes, nose and mouth.The DoE has also asked schools to discourage self-medication. Antibiotics and other medicines should not be taken without medical advice, according to the advisory.
Awareness to extend beyond classrooms
The government has asked schools to take the message beyond routine classroom instruction.Awareness activities can be carried out through morning assemblies, classroom interactions, notice boards, parent communication channels and digital platforms, the advisory said.This puts the responsibility on schools not only to follow preventive measures but also to make sure students and parents understand what they should do if symptoms appear.
District officials to monitor compliance
The DoE has directed district and zonal deputy directors of education to monitor compliance with the advisory.The officials have been asked to ensure that schools follow the prescribed measures and submit a compiled compliance report to the Directorate by August 31.The government’s message is therefore twofold: schools should be prepared, but the current situation does not call for panic. For students and staff, the immediate focus remains basic respiratory hygiene, cleanliness, ventilation and seeking medical advice when required.(with PTI inputs)
