From a farmer’s family in Bihar to cracking IIT-JEE at 12, earning a PhD at 24 and pursuing AI research in the US: How Satyam Kumar achieved so much at such a young age
At age 12, Bihar’s Satyam Kumar cracked IIT-JEE, one of India’s toughest competitive exams.

At an age when most children are still getting used to secondary school, Satyam Kumar was preparing for one of India’s toughest entrance examinations. At 12, the boy from Bihar cracked the IIT-JEE. A year later, he returned to the exam and secured an All India Rank of 670.What followed was not just another story of an unusually young student entering an IIT. Satyam went on to study electrical engineering at IIT Kanpur, work on robotics and research projects, pursue a PhD in the US and eventually build a career in artificial intelligence and machine learning.Today, years after his IIT success first made headlines, his journey has taken him deep into the world of AI research in the US.

Born into a farmer’s family in Bihar

Satyam was born on July 20, 1999, in Bakhorapur village in Bihar’s Buxar district. He grew up in a farmer’s family, far removed from the image of the privileged environment that is often associated with elite competitive-exam preparation. His academic ability became apparent early. A family friend reportedly suggested that his father send him to Kota, Rajasthan, for IIT-JEE coaching. That decision would eventually put the young boy on a remarkable academic path.

Satyam first appeared for the IIT entrance examination in 2011 but could not clear it. He tried again and succeeded at just 12.

Satyam first appeared for the IIT entrance examination in 2011 but could not clear it. He tried again and succeeded at just 12. But instead of stopping there, he appeared for the examination once more and, at 13, secured AIR 670 in IIT-JEE 2012, according to Anandabazar. He subsequently became known as one of the youngest students to enter an IIT.While speaking in an interview with IIT Kanpur, Satyam said looking back at his achievement: “When I cracked the JEE, it was a dream come true. I got the opportunity to pursue my education at one of the most prestigious institutes in the country.”

IIT Kanpur was more than just a degree

Satyam joined IIT Kanpur for a dual BTech-MTech programme in Electrical Engineering. But his time at the institute was not limited to lectures, examinations and assignments. He became involved in research laboratories as well as student initiatives. His interests increasingly moved towards intelligent systems, machine learning, robotics and advanced computing. According to Anandabazar, his work included involvement with IIT Kanpur’s Intelligent Systems and Sleep Laboratory and its robotics club. One of the projects he worked on with fellow students was a robot capable of functioning on both land and water. In 2014, the team finished third in a robotics competition. He also received opportunities to work outside India. In 2016, he received the Charpak scholarship for a research internship in France, followed by a Government of India teaching assistant fellowship in 2017. He completed his IIT Kanpur studies in 2018.Satyam later summed up the importance of those years in a simple way: “The learning environment at IIT Kanpur encouraged me to explore research and innovation. It helped me build the confidence to take on challenging problems.”

From IIT Kanpur to a PhD in the US

After graduating from IIT Kanpur, Satyam moved to the US in 2019 for further research. He joined the University of Texas for a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering. His doctoral research brought together two rapidly developing areas- machine learning and brain-computer interfaces. His work explored the intersection of artificial intelligence and technologies that can interpret signals from the human brain. The research took several years. He submitted his doctoral dissertation in September 2024 and completed his PhD at the age of 24, according to Anandabazar.During this period, he also gained industry exposure. Moneycontrol reported that Satyam interned with Apple in machine learning during his doctoral journey.

    From Apple to Texas Instruments

Completing a PhD at 24 could have been the natural high point of the story. For Satyam, it was another step. After completing his doctoral research, he joined Apple as a trainee engineer in 2024, with Switzerland reportedly being his first work location in that role.By October 2024, he was listed as a Machine Learning Systems Research Engineer at Texas Instruments. His work now centres on machine learning and artificial intelligence, putting him on the professional side of technologies that he had spent years studying and researching.Satyam’s Linkedin profile describes him as a Machine Learning Systems Research Engineer at Texas Instruments in the US, working on advanced AI and machine learning technologies.

    The story behind the age

It is easy to look at Satyam Kumar’s journey through a series of numbers: 12 when he first cracked IIT-JEE, 13 when he secured AIR 670, 24 when he completed his PhD. But the numbers alone do not explain the journey. His first IIT-JEE attempt did not work out. He tried again. After succeeding, he did not simply treat his achievement as the finish line. At IIT Kanpur, he moved towards research and robotics; later, he went overseas for advanced research and eventually entered the AI industry. For a boy who began his journey in a farmer’s family in Bihar, the path has stretched from Kota coaching classrooms to IIT Kanpur laboratories, a PhD programme in the US and research-driven technology companies.Satyam’s story, therefore, is not only about being exceptionally young when he entered an IIT. It is about what happened after the headlines faded- years of study, research, experimentation and a gradual move towards one of technology’s most important fields. And today, the boy once known primarily for cracking IIT-JEE at 12 is building his career around the very technologies expected to shape the next generation of computing: artificial intelligence and machine learning.
