For Madhuri Dixit’s children, their mother was simply “Mom” for years. They did not grow up fully aware that the woman they saw at home was one of Bollywood’s biggest stars. That changed when a family outing to watch a film ended with a crowd of photographers waiting outside.In a podcast conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia aka BeerBiceps, Madhuri spoke about how her sons first realised that their mother was not just a mother, but Madhuri Dixit, the actor.

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?
“They had no idea”
Madhuri recalled one particular incident when she and her children went to watch a film.
When Ranveer asked Madhuri which film she first showed her children, she said that was not really how things worked at home. “You know, it doesn’t happen like that. In our homes, you don’t just say, ‘Come, children, let’s watch this film.’ That’s not life.” Her children, she explained, did not really know about her celebrity status until the family moved to Mumbai.Madhuri recalled one particular incident when she and her children went to watch a film at PVR. When they came out of the theatre, photographers suddenly surrounded them. “There were so many photographers. They got confused. Everyone was clicking pictures, and they were like, ‘What is happening?’”The confusion continued after they reached home. “When we got home, they asked, ‘Mom, what’s happening?’” That was when Madhuri had to explain something that most celebrity parents might take for granted. “So I told them, ‘This is what happens. I am an actress, and that’s why they wanted pictures with all of us together.’”Her children were only six and eight at the time. “They had no idea,” she said.
“But Mom, you are a mom”
The family had been living away from India, which meant Madhuri’s fame did not have the same impact on her children. “Since we were living there (in the U.S.), they were not really influenced by all this,” she explained.But they slowly began to understand it through their classmates. “Slowly, they started realizing who I was because children at school would come and say, ‘You are so lucky.’” When her children asked why, the friends replied, “Because your mother is Madhuri Dixit. You are very lucky.”But for the children, that logic did not immediately make sense. “They would say, ‘But Mom, you are a mom.’” Madhuri would reply, “Yes, I am your mom.” “Then why is he saying you are lucky?” “So, these kinds of incidents happened,” said Madhuri.
Her children discovered her films much later
Earlier, they used to watch cartoons and superhero movies, said Madhuri.
Madhuri said her children eventually became more familiar with her work, but not necessarily because she sat them down and showed them her films. Instead, their Indian friends played a bigger role. “I think they have seen more of my films after they went to college, because of their friends,” she said. “Their Indian friends have made them watch more of my movies. I think they have seen more movies because of their friends than they had seen in their entire life.”Ranveer joked that if he were Madhuri Dixit, he would show his children his entire filmography. “But I am not Madhuri Dixit,” he said.Madhuri laughed and turned the joke around. “If you were Madhuri Dixit and had kids, you wouldn’t do that? That’s what happens. You don’t do that in homes.”
“Mom, how come you never showed us this movie?”
One film, however, eventually made its way to her children. It was Dil To Pagal Hai. Madhuri said her older son watched the film recently and loved it. “He said, ‘Mom, how come you never showed us this movie?’” “Were you ever interested in watching these movies?” she replied to him.At that age, her children had other preferences. “Earlier, they used to watch cartoons and superhero movies, right?” There was also another reason her films were not an obvious part of their childhood. Although her children understood Hindi, they had grown up outside India and were not fluent in the language.“After they moved here in Mumbai, only now they have started speaking Marathi and Hindi and all that,” Madhuri said.
Children do not have to inherit their parents’ identity, achievements or fame
Her sons did not grow up thinking, “Our mother is a Bollywood superstar.” At home, she was simply their mother. They were free to be interested in cartoons, superheroes and their own world. Her films became interesting to them much later, when they were older and their friends introduced them to that part of their mother’s life.For parents, this can be a useful reminder to separate your achievements from your child’s identity. Instead of repeatedly telling children, “Do you know what your mother/father has achieved?” let them discover it naturally. It gives children room to form their own opinion about their parents and, more importantly, about themselves.A practical approach is to answer their questions honestly but not turn every family achievement into a lesson. If a child asks why people recognise you, explain it simply. If they show no interest, let it go. Children don’t need to be impressed by their parents. They need to feel close to them. Madhuri’s sons may have taken years to discover her filmography, but they already knew the person behind it. It was their mom.
