For decades, a sprawling stretch of land along Nevada’s Carson River had a rather unusual place in the state’s history. In the 1940s and 1950s, part of the property operated as a “divorce ranch”, offering a temporary refuge for people seeking to end their marriages under Nevada’s famously lenient divorce laws.Now, more than 70 years later, the same 1,627-acre landscape is beginning a completely different chapter. After more than 155 years in private ownership, the Lower Carson Ranch has been transferred to Nevada State Parks and is becoming the state’s 28th state park.The property, located near Dayton in Lyon County, stretches along approximately 4.5 miles of the lower Carson River. Its transition from a privately held ranch and historic divorce destination into protected public land is expected to preserve important wildlife habitat while eventually giving visitors access to a landscape that has remained largely private for generations.
The ranch where people came to end their marriages
During the 1940s, Nevada had developed a reputation as one of the easiest places in the United States to obtain a divorce. The state required people seeking a divorce to establish residency for only six weeks before they could pursue the legal process.That relatively short residency requirement created a unique industry. People from across the country travelled to Nevada, often staying at specialised ranches while waiting to meet the residency requirement and complete their divorces.Part of the Lower Carson Ranch became one of these so-called divorce ranches during the 1940s. The properties offered visitors a place to stay while they waited out the required period, turning divorce into an unusual form of tourism in the state.The ranch was not simply a place where people passed through. It became part of a broader Nevada phenomenon in which wealthy and middle-class Americans could escape the restrictions and lengthy legal processes surrounding divorce in their home states.
A 155-year private legacy enters a new chapter
The Lower Carson Ranch had remained in private hands for more than 150 years before its transfer to Nevada State Parks. Its new status means the landscape will eventually become accessible to the public while protecting its river corridor and surrounding habitat. The property contains important riparian areas along the Carson River, providing habitat for fish and wildlife. Conservation of the river corridor was a major part of the effort to protect the land.The landscape lies within the traditional homelands of the Numu, or Northern Paiute, and Wá∙šiw, or Washoe, peoples. Its history also includes Indigenous stewardship, emigrant travel routes and generations of ranching.The land was formally conveyed to Nevada State Parks by the Western Rivers Conservancy in July 2026. The conservation organisation worked to protect the property and transfer it to the state, ensuring that its riverfront habitat would be permanently conserved.Interestingly, Nevada’s newest state park does not yet have an official name. Nevada State Parks launched a public process to choose one, inviting people to vote on three proposed names: Crossroads Canyon State Park, Heritage Canyon State Park and River’s Edge State Park.Each name was intended to reflect a different aspect of the property:
- Crossroads Canyon State Park refers to the movement of people and cultures through the region, while also acknowledging the landscape’s canyon setting and its unusual history as a divorce ranch.
- Heritage Canyon State Park focuses on the area’s Indigenous, emigrant and ranching history.
- River’s Edge State Park highlights the Carson River and the property’s future as a place for conservation and recreation.
Voting took place from August 1 to August 14, 2026, with the official name expected to be announced in fall 2026.Although the property has officially entered Nevada’s state park system, visitors will have to wait before they can freely explore the entire 1,627 acres. Nevada State Parks currently says public access is limited to Fort Churchill Road, as the new park still needs development before it can fully welcome visitors. That means the transformation is still in its early stages. Over time, however, the former private ranch is expected to offer opportunities for recreation, conservation and education along the Carson River.
