The story of a banjara guardian
According to the local legend, the story goes back to a time when a group of Banjaras lived in the area. Curly tales sharing a video on Instagram, says that around 150 years ago, the community faced a severe food shortage, during which one of the Banjaras died. A samadhi was subsequently built in his memory, and over time, he came to be revered locally as Bhoot Mama. Another version of the local belief presents Bhoot Mama as a protector who sacrificed his life for the safety of the villagers. After his death, people began treating him as a guardian deity and seeking his protection and blessings. As generations passed, the shrine became increasingly associated with the name Bhoot Mama, turning the memory of a Banjara man into a living tradition of faith.
Why do devotees offer cigarettes?
The most fascinating ritual at the shrine is the cigarette offering. Local belief holds that Bhoot Mama was particularly fond of smoking. As a result, devotees began offering cigarettes as a gesture of devotion. Some simply place packets of cigarettes at the shrine, while others light them before the deity. Reports have even noted that dozens of cigarettes may be offered at the temple in a single day. For devotees, however, the cigarette is not merely a cigarette.
