He worked as the green ranger in ‘Power Rangers’, then used the experience to rob 43 homes as the ‘Spider-Man thief’

He worked as the green ranger in 'Power Rangers', then used the experience to rob 43 homes as the 'Spider-Man thief'

One’s time on TV does not only leave them with a history of screen presence, but also an alternate talent it seems, one that is not just limited to acting. Such is the case of a former Green Ranger stunt performer who turned his skills into a web of criminal activity. According to a report by Gulf News, the unsettling reality came into focus with the story of Yasutomo Ihara, a Japanese stuntman who helped bring the iconic Green Ranger from the popular TV show Power Rangers to life. His case was revealed by Screen Rant and shows how specialised training can carry over into unexpected and illegal real-world situations.

Power Rangers was a part of the childhood of thousands of kids. Filmed as the long-running Super Sentai series in Japan in 1975, it was later adapted into the global hit Power Rangers, for Western audiences. It is a popular and nostalgic show but most fans don’t know that the epic battle sequences they loved and possibly imitated at home were not filmed in California with the American cast. Instead, they arrived from Japan’s Super Sentai series.Japanese stunt performers like Ihara donned the full suits and executed the thrilling acrobatics and fight choreography. Then, their work was seamlessly stitched together with dialogue filmed by American actors. Among the Japanese performers, Ihara was essential. He had appeared in Tensou Sentai Goseiger and Kamen Rider OOO. His athletic ability and precise movements helped create the action sequences that defined generations of childhood including grand flips, high falls and complex fights. However, in 2009, a knee injury ended Ihara’s stunt career. He struggled to find a stable income since the entertainment industry had no place for an injured stunt performer. Soon, Ihara was facing mounting financial pressure with no clear solution in sight.Desperate to return to the entertainment world, he came up with a plan to fund a drama school. But with no money in his pocket, he decided to outsource the investments, illegally.

    The Spider-Man thief

Between late 2013 and 2014, Ihara committed a series of burglaries across the Saitama Prefecture in Japan. He targeted at least 43 homes before authorities finally caught him in 2014, according to the Mary Sue. His approach to crime was chillingly efficient. The same physical abilities that made him a standout stunt performer became tools for breaking and entering.Ihara scaled walls, climbed poles, and accessed upper-floor balconies with ease. His training allowed him to reach entry points that ordinary thieves couldn’t access. Japanese media dubbed him the “Spider-Man Thief.” He confessed to stealing goods valued at roughly 8.2 million yen, about $77,000 at the time. In 2020, he was sentenced to five years in prison.Recently, Ihara’s story has resurfaced on social media after content creators such as Project Nightfall highlighted the unusual and sad trajectory of his career. The coverage underscored how quickly the line between discipline and desperation can blur in industries where talent is celebrated, but long-term stability is rare.“This is such a complex and sad story. It feels like both personal struggle and a system that often leaves talented people unsupported once the fame fades,” wrote a viewer of the video.“A reminder of how important it is to provide opportunities, mental health support, and stability beyond the spotlight,” added another.
