Blair Clark and his wife Leah have spent more than four years on their YouTube show, The Leah and Blair Slog, helping people reconnect with relatives they’ve never known, or lost touch with. The couple, who live in the Philippines, have helped adoptees find biological parents and Amerasian Filipinos find fathers once stationed at U.S. naval and air bases. But in a remarkable twist Blair has recently become the seeker of a missing part of his own family history. According to a report by Upworthy, Blair was given a DNA testing kit from MyHeritage, a family history and genetic testing company. He signed up for the platform and found a 22.7% DNA match with a 66-year-old woman in San Antonio, Texas, named Fiona. The match suggested Fiona could be an aunt or a half-sister. As Blair started to look into the connection, the evidence was pointing more and more to an incredible conclusion: Fiona was his long-lost sister. The find was especially poignant as Blair had known a family secret since the age of 20. His mother, Isabel, told him that she’d had a child when she was 19, and she’d placed the baby for adoption.
A family divided by social stigma
Isabel’s story was a painful truth faced by many unmarried mothers in the United Kingdom after the Second World War, states the news report. Women who had children out of wedlock were often stigmatized and in many cases pressured to give their children up for adoption. It also reports that around 200,000 mothers were forced to give children up for adoption in the 30 years after the war, during the UK’s war-time generation. Isabel died aged 59 in 1999, never finding out that her daughter would be identified decades later. And then, Fiona was adopted shortly after birth and brought up in Scotland and Bermuda. Over the years she has worked in the oil industry, human resources and retail management. Ultimately, her life took her to Louisiana, Yemen and San Antonio, Texas. She later had two daughters, three grandsons and a great-grandson.
66 years waiting for answers
Fiona opened a MyHeritage account about 10 years ago, leaving the door open for a family find. The long-awaited connection finally appeared after Blair joined the platform. The two then met over Zoom, where Fiona found out Blair was her brother, and she had three brothers in all. One of the most moving moments was when Fiona was shown a picture of Isabel. She’d never known her mother, but seeing her face suddenly gave a tangible connection to the woman whose identity had been a mystery all her life. Fiona’s similarity to their mother made the discovery all the more powerful for Blair. The picture helped cement his understanding that the woman he had known only in family lore for years had left behind another daughter.
From helping others to finding his own family
There was a strange irony in Blair’s discovery. For years he and Leah had sat behind the camera, helping strangers find family histories and witness emotional reunions. Suddenly, Blair was experiencing the same uncertainty, excitement and sense of closure as the people he had previously helped. The experience also gave him a greater appreciation of what those reunions meant to those involved, especially Fiona, who lived 65 years without knowing her biological identity or family. Now the newly discovered siblings are working to build the relationship they never had growing up. Blair lives in the Philippines and two of his brothers are in Australia. The four siblings hope to meet up in Thailand around the end of 2026, starting a new chapter for a family separated for more than six decades. A GoFundMe campaign is underway to help fund the reunion.
