Before he died in 2013, an Ohio man gave his son a final mission: use a metal detector to find the wedding ring he lost in the yard nearly 50 years ago
John Arnett lost his wedding ring in his Ohio yard decades ago. Before his death in 2013, he asked his son Jeff to search for it with a metal detector. After years of unsuccessful searches, Jeff finally found the ring in August 2026, buried eight inches underground. (AI Generated Image)

His father, John Arnett, had lost his wedding band decades earlier while washing his 1976 Plymouth Volare station wagon outside the family home in Swanton, Ohio. Before John died in 2013, he asked his son to do something simple but strangely difficult: return to their old yard someday with a metal detector and look for it.It took Jeff 11 years to complete that final request.

A ring lost nearly 50 years ago

John Arnett, a chief master sergeant in the Ohio National Guard, lost his wedding ring sometime between 1977 and 1982. He believed it had fallen somewhere in the front yard while he was washing his car.He eventually bought another ring. But he never quite forgot the original.About a year and a half before his death from pulmonary fibrosis in 2013, John had a serious conversation with Jeff.“If you ever get a metal detector, will you go over to our old yard and see if you can find my ring?” he asked.Jeff remembered the request.

The first search came after his death

In the fall of 2013, shortly after his father died at 78, Jeff borrowed a metal detector from a friend and searched the yard.Nothing.What began as a promise soon turned into a hobby. Jeff eventually bought his own detector in 2023 and returned to the property repeatedly, searching during spring and fall and even winter when the ground was not frozen.Over time, he recovered about 150 objects, including nails, nuts, bolts and coins. But not the ring.

    Then came one final search

In 2026, two of Jeff’s siblings gave him an upgraded metal detector. On August 16, he decided to make another attempt. There was a reason for the urgency. The house belonged to Jeff’s former pastor, who planned to sell it. Jeff feared future owners might not allow him to continue searching. Before starting, he prayed for help. Then came the signal. The ring was buried about eight inches below the ground. Jeff later recalled that only five minutes passed between switching on the detector and finding it.The object was a 14-karat white-gold wedding band.

    His mother confirmed the mystery

Jeff suspected he had finally found his father’s ring, but he wanted proof. He took it to his mother, Carol Arnett, who was 90 at the time.“I handed it to her and she said, ‘That’s it.’”The family then pulled out an old photo album from John and Carol’s 1957 wedding. Photographs showed John wearing the same ring. The decades-old mystery was finally settled.

More than a metal detector find

For Jeff, the discovery was not really about finding a piece of jewellery. When he put the ring on his finger, he realised that his father had been the last person to wear it, and he was the first family member to wear it after its recovery. He described the feeling as the closest thing to touching his father again. The ring now has a place on his desk, inside a box that also contains one of John’s watches.Jeff plans to keep metal detecting. But this search will always be different.A father lost a ring nearly five decades ago. His son spent 11 years trying to keep one small promise. And sometimes, that is what an heirloom really carries: not its price, but the person who once wore it.Disclaimer: This article is based on the account reported by The New York Times and the information provided in the reference material.
