His story is simple to state but hard to imagine: a young man with a genuinely rocky academic record who went on to crack one of the toughest examinations in the country, the UPSC Civil Services Examination, and became a police officer. One of his motivational videos on the topic reportedly crossed over 9 million views on Instagram, a reflection of just how much his journey resonates with people, especially students who feel like their marks have already decided their future.
The academic record nobody expects from a future IPS officer
According to details Sharma has shared himself across interviews and social media posts, his school and college years were far from impressive on paper. He scored 57 percent in his Class 10 board exams, but that number dropped sharply to just 34 percent in Class 11 before recovering somewhat to 60 percent in Class 12. Things got tougher during his engineering degree, where he accumulated 24 backlogs, meaning there were 24 subjects he had to clear again after initially failing them. For most people, a record like this would seem like an unlikely starting point for one of India’s most competitive government exams. But for Sharma, it became the very backdrop against which his eventual success would stand out.
Eighteen months that changed everything
By his own account, Sharma had little to no familiarity with the UPSC exam before he decided to pursue it seriously. He has spoken about stepping away from distractions and dedicating himself entirely to preparation for about 18 months, building a disciplined daily study routine and staying focused on a single goal during that period. That focused effort paid off. Sharma cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination with an All India Rank of 182. Official government transfer and posting records identify him as a 2011-batch IPS officer belonging to the AGMUT cadre (Arunachal Pradesh–Goa–Mizoram–Union Territories), which aligns with him having appeared for and cleared the exam around 2010, since UPSC batch years are typically assigned the year after the exam is cleared.
From engineering backlogs to Indian Police Service
Sharma’s transition from a struggling engineering student to a police officer wasn’t just about clearing an exam; it also reflected a shift in mindset. He has described his engineering background as something that shaped how he approaches problem-solving today, believing that analytical thinking developed during his technical studies could be applied meaningfully to public service and law enforcement. Since joining the IPS, Sharma has served in a range of postings, including in Delhi, Lakshadweep, and Jammu and Kashmir. In 2025, he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and posted as DIG, Armed Jammu, a homecoming of sorts, since Sharma hails from Jammu himself.
