5 killed as Amazon-linked Boeing 767 crashes off runway; huge smoke plume seen in video

At least five people have died after an Amazon cargo Boeing 767-300 plane crashed into vehicles and caught fire while overshooting the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, officials said. The aircraft overran the runway at around 2 pm Sunday after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, killing five people and critically injuring three others, while two more sustained less severe injuries, Miami-Dade County officials said at a news conference.Miami-Dade Rescue Fire chief Ray Jadallah said several people were trapped inside vehicles following the crash, while the pilot and copilot were also trapped inside the aircraft. Fire crews continued to deal with a fuel leak several hours after the crash, he told news agency AP.More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units rushed to the scene, where they found the aircraft on fire. Crews worked to extinguish the flames and assess and treat those injured.Video footage showed the aircraft positioned alongside a road after it went off the runway.A huge plume of black smoke can be seen rising high into the sky in the video. The aircraft “overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport around 2 pm local time,” the FAA said in a statement to CNN.The Prime Air aircraft came to rest beside a roadway near two semi-trucks, according to images from the scene. The plane appeared to be resting on its belly and remained largely intact despite the fire. The flight was operated by North Carolina-based cargo carrier 21 Air. The 32-year-old Boeing 767 was originally built as a passenger aircraft and flew for several airlines for more than two decades before being converted into a cargo plane in 2015, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24.Around 250 flights were delayed at the airport by late Sunday afternoon, according to FlightAware, which tracks flight disruptions. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy to Miami to investigate the crash.“We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a social media post. “Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved.”The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft had departed from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the FAA said.
