Some library books disappear for a few months. Others never make it back. But one copy of Your Child, His Family, and Friends took nearly 82 years to complete its journey home. According to the San Antonio Public Library, which announced the unusual return in August 2025, the book was checked out in July 1943 and was due back 28 days later. The story was also reported by Texas Public Radio and CBS News. Instead, it resurfaced in June 2025, arriving at the library from Oregon with a letter explaining how it had spent more than eight decades away.
A book that travelled across generations
The book, written by Frances Bruce Strain, was found among the belongings of the sender’s late father in Oregon. The person who returned it believes their grandmother had originally borrowed the book when their father was 11 years old. At the time, the family was preparing to relocate to Mexico City, where the grandmother was transferred for work with the U.S. Embassy.The book appears to have travelled with the family, eventually making its way through the generations before landing in the hands of the Oregon resident who discovered it. Rather than keep the decades-old library copy, the person decided it was time to send it back to San Antonio.
The return came with one slightly awkward question
Along with the book was a handwritten letter that included a lighthearted concern: whether the family would still have to pay the overdue charge. It was a reasonable question, considering the book’s original checkout date.A notation inside the book showed that the library’s fine at the time was three cents per day for keeping a book beyond its due date. Had that rate simply been applied across the entire period, the amount would have approached $900. But the returning family got lucky, at least as far as the library’s current rules are concerned.
The late fee is no longer a problem
The San Antonio Public Library eliminated overdue fines in 2021, saying the move was intended to reduce financial barriers to using its services. So there was no decades-old bill waiting for the book when it finally arrived home.There is also an important wrinkle to the potential calculation: library officials noted that under historical policies, an item could eventually have been treated as lost and charged at its replacement cost, meaning there is no definitive figure for what the actual bill would have been. Either way, the book escaped a very expensive reunion.
From a 1943 checkout to a ibrary display
The returned copy was reportedly still in good condition despite its extraordinary journey. For a short time, the book was put on display in the lobby of San Antonio’s Central Library, turning an ordinary parenting book from the 1940s into a small piece of local library history.After the display, the library planned to donate it to the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library, which would offer it for sale through the Book Cellar used bookstore. Proceeds from the store support the library. More than eight decades after it was borrowed, the book’s story has become almost as interesting as the one printed on its pages, a reminder that sometimes a library book doesn’t simply get returned. It becomes part of a family’s history before finding its way home.
