Zero waste, zero electricity bill: How a 75-year-old Padma Shri awardee built a home that powers itself and 50 others too

Zero waste, zero electricity bill: How a 75-year-old Padma Shri awardee built a home that powers itself and 50 others too

Long before she became known for her self-sustaining home, Janak Palta McGilligan’s journey toward environmentalism began with a personal health scare. As a teenager, she survived a near-death experience and underwent open-heart surgery at just 17 years old. That brush with mortality gave her a newfound respect for life, and she decided early on to dedicate herself to the well-being of the planet. Her environmental awareness deepened further in 1992, when she was invited to attend the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, an experience that exposed her to the scale of environmental problems being faced across the world.

A home that runs on wind, sun, and nothing else

The turning point in Janak’s story came in 2011, following the death of her husband, Jimmy McGilligan. She moved into their home in Sanawadia village near Indore and set out to keep a promise she had made to the environment years earlier. What followed was a complete transformation of her home into a fully sustainable, self-sufficient space. Her household today generates no electricity bill at all. A windmill installed on her property powers not just her own home but also supplies electricity to nearly 50 neighbouring houses. Alongside this, she grows organic vegetables, pulses, rice, wheat, and spices in her own garden, which is home to around 160 trees and 13 different crops. All her cooking is done using solar cookers, and when sunlight isn’t available, she turns old newspapers into makeshift bricks to fuel her kitchen instead. Nothing in her home goes to waste, kitchen scraps are composted, and her lifestyle largely avoids the need for regular shopping or garbage disposal altogether. Beyond food and energy, reports note that her home also produces items like soaps, shampoo, detergents, and jams, made using natural, homegrown ingredients, further reducing her dependence on store-bought goods.

Janak’s impact reaches far beyond her own household. She is the founder and director of the Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development, an Indore-based non-profit named in honour of her late husband, and she previously served as director of the Barli Development Institute for Rural Women, an organisation she and Jimmy had founded together in 1985 to empower tribal and rural women.Through her work, more than 150,000 young people and over 6,000 rural and tribal women from over 1,000 villages have been trained in solar cooking and sustainable living practices. Some more recent reports place this number even higher, at around 1.8 lakh people trained overall. Affectionately known as “Janak Didi,” she continues to open her home to visitors, farmers, and students who want to see her sustainable methods in action and is often referred to as the “Queen of Sustainability” for the influence her work has had across the region.

National recognition for a life devoted to sustainability

National recognition for a life devoted to sustainability.

In 2015, Janak Palta McGilligan was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, in recognition of her contribution to social work and environmental conservation. The award was presented to her at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. Now in her mid-to-late seventies, she continues to live in and maintain her zero-waste home in Sanawadia, more than a decade after she first began the transformation.

A model that keeps inspiring others

What makes Janak’s story stand out isn’t just her personal lifestyle choice; it’s the ripple effect it continues to create. Local municipal officials have reportedly praised her home as a model worth replicating, and her decades of training work have equipped thousands of ordinary people, many from rural and tribal backgrounds, with practical skills to live more sustainably themselves. In a time when conversations around climate change and sustainable living are becoming increasingly urgent, Janak Palta McGilligan’s home in Sanawadia stands as living proof that a genuinely waste-free, self-powered lifestyle isn’t just theoretical; it’s something one determined person has already been living for well over a decade.
