Quote of the day by Leonardo da Vinci: "Principles for the development of a complete mind: Study the science of art. Study the art of science...realise that everything connects to everything else."

Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian painter, sculptor, engineer, architect, and scientist, popularly considered one of history’s most versatile minds. Born in a small town, he trained as an artist in Florence before painting the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, two of the most recognised works of art in the world. But painting was only one part of what he did. His notebooks, thousands of pages, are filled with studies on anatomy, water, flight, geology, and mechanics, often on the same page as a sketch for a painting. He didn’t really separate these pursuits from one another, which is exactly what resonates with one of his ideas.

These are the principles for the development of a complete mind: Study the science of art. Study the art of science. Develop your senses- especially learn how to see. Realise that everything connects to everything else

    Leonardo da Vinci

    What does the quote mean?

Leonardo’s words talk about the spirit of his notebooks; here, “Study the science of art” means that art isn’t just feeling and instinct. It has structure, including factors like proportion, anatomy, light, and geometry.Leonardo’s own studies of the human body, done through actual dissection, were what let him paint muscles and expressions with such accuracy.“Study the art of science” tells another story, that even hard, technical work benefits from imagination and an eye for form, which is why his engineering sketches look as beautiful as his paintings.“Develop your senses, especially learn how to see”; through this, Leonardo is telling us to slow down and actually look at things properly, instead of just glancing at something and moving on, which is what most of us do all day without noticing. It shows how all these ties it all together. Nothing in life sits in its own little box. The moment you start noticing how one thing relates to another, that’s usually when things really start to click.

How are these words relevant today?

Leonardo cared about the bigger picture by exploring all the realms of science and other subjects. Today, schools and careers still push people to pick one lane early and stick to it, even though that often means losing what Leonardo cared so much about. But when we look deeper today, we relaise that the problems that we face right now are much intertwined with one another.Leonardo never split knowledge into separate boxes; he saw it as one connected thing, and that’s basically what people now call “systems thinking.” Honestly, it might be more useful today than it’s ever been.In a world full of scrolling, skimming, and constant distraction, actually slowing down enough to notice details in a person, a problem, or a piece of work is a rarer skill than it used to be, and often a more valuable one.
