A car crash left this Army veteran paralysed; seven years later, he graduated with a petroleum engineering degree

Rocky Fernandez’s life took an unexpected turn when a car crash left the Army veteran paralysed, forcing him to rebuild plans that had once seemed straightforward. Recovery brought hospital stays, rehabilitation and medical setbacks, but his ambitions did not disappear. As reported by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, with support from the Houston VA and vocational services, Fernandez returned to education and worked towards a petroleum engineering degree. Seven years after the accident, he reached a milestone that once seemed difficult to imagine: graduation. His journey involved far more than completing coursework, requiring him to balance ongoing health challenges with college and daily life. Now, he is preparing to begin a career in petroleum engineering.

Rocky Fernandez’s life changed after a car crash left him paralysed

Before the crash, Fernandez was an Army veteran with plans that centred on education and what might come afterwards. The accident altered those plans almost immediately. The years that followed were marked by medical complications and rehabilitation. There were extended periods in hospital, including treatment for a serious infection, while adapting to life with paralysis brought a different set of demands outside the hospital as well.Going back to college was therefore not simply a matter of returning to a classroom. Fernandez had to work around circumstances that could make attending classes, studying and managing everyday tasks considerably more complicated.Reportedly, he found support at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, where treatment was accompanied by services aimed at helping him regain some independence and continue pursuing his education.

VA support helped Fernandez stay focused on college

Vocational support became an important part of that process. Shaun Smith, Fernandez’s vocational counsellor at the VA, helped him work through some of the obstacles between his circumstances and his college plans. For Fernandez, that assistance formed part of a much larger effort. Medical care, rehabilitation and practical support all had to fit around the same goal: getting his education finished. His vocational counselor Shaun Smith said Fernandez’s approach was striking because he remained focused on what he wanted to achieve rather than allowing each setback to change the destination.“I’m not gonna lie, it was hard to have faith after all these setbacks,” Fernandez said. He eventually learned to slow things down, deal with what was in front of him and keep moving.

His recovery extended beyond medical treatment

Fernandez has also become a regular presence at the Houston VA’s wellness programmes. Among the activities he attends is weekly yoga, where he works with yoga therapist Darcy Robinson. His sessions have included meditation, deep relaxation and sound-bowl therapy alongside yoga. Robinson described Fernandez as willing to experiment with different approaches to his wellbeing, rather than treating rehabilitation as something confined to conventional medical appointments. For staff who have worked with Fernandez, these activities have offered another view of his recovery. He is not only someone receiving care. He has also become familiar to people around the medical centre, where his regular presence and interactions with staff have made him a recognisable figure.

Fernandez’s recovery has also inspired him to help other veterans

Dr Donna Huang, one of the physicians involved in his care, said Fernandez continued to think about other veterans even while dealing with his own complicated medical course. During the early stages of rehabilitation, he was already considering how he might eventually support people facing spinal cord injuries themselves.Fernandez came to view disability as part of the range of human experience rather than something that should determine what a person can or cannot attempt. He hoped to become a peer support partner for veterans dealing with similar injuries.Huang said, “What stood out about taking care of Rocky was his unwavering resilience and optimism in the face of a complicated medical course with multiple setbacks.”Fernandez now puts that idea into simpler terms. He believes there are fewer fixed boundaries around what a person can accomplish than circumstances might initially suggest.

After years of setbacks, Fernandez finally earned his degree

The graduation this spring marked the completion of a course of study that began before his accident and continued through years of profound change.Fernandez now has a petroleum engineering degree from Houston City College. The qualification does not erase the medical complications or the limitations he still lives with. It does, however, give him something concrete to build on after a period in which much of his life had to be reorganised around recovery. His next step is already taking shape. He is looking for work in petroleum engineering and wants to use the degree he worked so long to obtain.
