What began with a $40 cleaning kit and one littered New York City block eventually turned into a neighbourhood effort to clean, garden and reclaim public space. David Clarke, a 24-year-old New Yorker behind the grassroots project Trash Talk NYC, spent 100 days cleaning the area around West 171st Street between Broadway and Fort Washington Avenue in Washington Heights, according to Hoodline and Clarke’s own account of the project. Clarke initially set out with little more than trash bags, a grabber and his phone. He documented the cleanups on social media, turning a personal attempt to tackle litter near his home into part of a larger campaign focused on neglected streets across New York City.
It started with one block
Clarke has described feeling frustrated by the condition of his neighbourhood and unsure what one person could realistically do about it. Instead of waiting for a larger cleanup effort, he began picking up litter himself.The idea soon grew beyond simply removing rubbish. Clarke wanted the transformation to be visible enough that people would feel invested in keeping the area clean. His Trash Talk NYC project eventually expanded to other parts of New York, with residents suggesting locations that needed attention. According to Clarke’s account, the project quickly attracted volunteers and attention from local officials and community members. But the 100-day effort in Washington Heights became particularly personal.
From rubbish to flower beds
As the cleanup continued, Clarke began looking at the neglected tree beds along the sidewalk differently. He sourced plants, added soil and mulch, and began turning the spaces around street trees into small gardens.He also built protective fences around some of the beds. The gardening work cost considerably more than the original cleanup: Clarke has said he spent about $2,000 of his own money on fencing and gardening supplies. Local businesses later contributed plants, lumber and other materials, according to Hoodline. The aim was not simply to make the pavement look better. The gardens gave residents something tangible to care for, and made the consequences of neglect more visible.Clarke’s approach also fits with the broader philosophy behind Trash Talk NYC. On the project’s website, he describes litter collection as only a temporary solution and argues that residents need practical ways to take greater ownership of their neighbourhoods.
Then the neighbours began joining
The most striking change came as the work stopped looking like a one-man project. Neighbours began helping with cleanups and taking an interest in the new gardens. The small fences Clarke built around the tree beds became places where people could sit, while the flowers gave the once-neglected spaces a new purpose.Not everything went smoothly. Some plants were stolen, and Clarke has continued asking supporters to help fund the ongoing work. But the response from residents showed that the project had moved beyond simply collecting trash.The transformation also brought attention to the question of who is responsible for keeping New York’s sidewalks clean. The city’s rules place much of that responsibility on property owners, while community groups and volunteers frequently take on additional cleanup and beautification work.
A 100-day challenge that kept going
Clarke’s original challenge may have been limited to 100 days, but the project did not stop there. His social-media updates continued after the milestone, while Trash Talk NYC has grown into a wider effort involving volunteers across New York.What began with one person picking up litter on his block has therefore become something more ambitious: an attempt to make residents active participants in the appearance and upkeep of their streets.The lesson from the Washington Heights block is relatively simple. Clarke did not begin with a large organisation, a city grant or a team of workers. He began with a grabber, some bags and the decision to show up every day. By the time the 100 days were over, he was no longer the only person showing up.
