Saif Ali Khan recalls feeling the possibility of death after the stabbing incident: ‘I felt this must be it, but my takeaway is that you shouldn’t tempt fate’ |

Saif Ali Khan recalls feeling the possibility of death after the stabbing incident: 'I felt this must be it, but my takeaway is that you shouldn't tempt fate'

More than a year after being stabbed during an attempted burglary at his Mumbai home, Saif Ali Khan has reflected on the incident and how it changed the way he looks at security, privilege and life itself. The actor, who sustained serious injuries in the January 2025 attack, said the experience left him with a deeper understanding of how vulnerable life can be and a strong sense of gratitude for having survived. The attack took place in the early hours of January 16, 2025, when an intruder allegedly entered Saif’s home. The actor suffered multiple stab wounds, including injuries to his spine, neck and hand, and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He was discharged five days later.Saif admitted that he had never been particularly comfortable with the idea of heavy security and had preferred a more open lifestyle. However, the attack forced him to reconsider that approach.“I wasn’t a big fan of security, and I quite liked an open thing. But my takeaway is that there are a lot of haves and have-nots in the world, and you should not tempt fate. So you have to lock the doors, you have to put away the valuables, and you have to understand how lucky you are and how unlucky most people are,” he said in an interview with Gulf News. For Saif, the incident also raised uncomfortable questions about the disparity between those who have privilege and those who do not. He said the attack made him think about inequality and the circumstances that may push people towards crime.“That’s the real kind of thing—you understand why this thing happened, because of inequality,” he said. While the immediate danger has passed, Saif said the psychological impact of the attack has remained with him. In fact, he admitted that certain aspects of the experience have become harder to process with time.“As time goes by, some parts become even worse. It doesn’t really leave you that just how lucky it was, how close it came, how violent that whole thing was and how quick it was,” he said. The actor said he continues to carry two contrasting feelings from that night — an awareness of how close he came to death and immense gratitude for the life he has lived.“There are two things. One is that, and emotional dealing with that, which just feels very lucky,” Saif said, adding, “I remember feeling at one point that this must be it, but I also remember thinking it’s been an amazing life.”Recalling the moment, Saif said the rush of adrenaline that came with the confrontation also brought an unexpected sense of reflection. Faced with the possibility of death, he found himself thinking about the life he had already lived.“There’s something about adrenaline and something about a warrior’s death also. I think there is adrenaline involved when it actually happens. I was quite happy and I remember feeling it has been an absolutely amazing (life).”Saif had earlier spoken about the incident in a conversation with Mojo Story, where he also said he wanted to forgive the accused rather than remain consumed by anger over the attack. The actor recalled how the intruder allegedly entered through a bathroom window before reaching the room where his younger son Jeh and the nanny were. According to Saif, the nanny alerted him after spotting a man armed with a knife.“I went in there and saw this guy holding a knife. He had cut the baby a little bit, and he had cut the maid a little bit. He was standing there with this knife.”Saif said that, in hindsight, he sometimes wondered if the situation could have been handled differently. He considered whether speaking to the intruder might have prevented the confrontation, but said his instincts took over in the moment.“Maybe, you know, if I had put the lights on and said, ‘Do you know where you are? Do you know what you’re doing?’ Maybe I could have talked him out of it. But I did something, I don’t know, something took over. It was a little crazy. I jumped on him, and we had this fight. He went crazy with these knives, and there were cuts and blood everywhere. He wasn’t a very big fellow, but two knives are two knives. It kind of just got out of hand.”Despite the severity of the incident, Saif said he did not want to carry resentment towards the accused and hoped to leave the episode behind.“I even want to forgive this guy because I think he made a huge mistake, and I don’t think he was even looking for a fight.”
