For most cricketers, the innings that define them are played out in the middle. Jacob Martin’s longest battle was fought in a courtroom.The former India batsman was acquitted in a 22-year-old criminal case tied to a controversial 2004 cricket tour of the United Kingdom. The Patiala House Court in Delhi cleared the Vadodara resident of all charges: forgery, cheating, criminal conspiracy and offences under the Passport Act.The case traced back to a 2004 FIR invoking Sections 420, 468, 471 and 120B of the IPC alongside Section 12 of the Passport Act. Prosecutors alleged a forged UK immigration stamp, dubious travel arrangements and financial transactions involving Martin. None of it held up.Nor did the court find credible evidence of Martin owning or controlling Ajwa Sports Club, the club at the centre of the allegations. Witness after witness failed to back the prosecution’s case, and the charges collapsed.Martin is 54 now. The verdict closes a chapter that ran for more than two decades and reshaped both his career and his life outside it.
From Ranji runs to the India cap
Before any of this, Martin had built a name as one of domestic cricket’s most reliable middle-order batsmen. Born in Baroda, he made his living on concentration and the sheer willingness to bat time. His breakout came in the 1998-99 Ranji Trophy, when he crossed 1,000 runs for the season and became only the sixth batter in the competition’s history to do so.

That run brought him national attention, and eventually a India call-up.His first-class career dwarfs his international one. Martin played 138 first-class matches, scored over 9,000 runs, hit 23 centuries and averaged above 46. He also captained Baroda to the 2000-01 Ranji Trophy, still the team’s most recent title, and later returned to Baroda cricket as a coach.At the international level, though, it never really took off. Ten ODIs, a debut against the West Indies in Toronto in 1999, and a stretch between 1999 and 2001 in which he managed 158 runs at 22.57.
The tour that changed everything
The number that shadows Martin’s career isn’t 10 caps or 9,000 first-class runs. It’s 22, the years the case hung over him.By his account, it started with a team associated with him that travelled to the UK in 2004. Most of the players came home. One didn’t, overstaying his six-month visa. That player, Martin says, arranged a fake immigration stamp through a contact in Britain. He was eventually deported and picked up at Indira Gandhi International Airport for questioning.Martin insists his name wasn’t in the original FIR at all, that he was pulled into the investigation later, partly because of who he was.“In 2004 a team of mine had gone, which had gone to the UK to play. That team which went to play in England in 2004, everyone came back except one boy who stayed back in the UK. Because the visa had a validity of 6 months, he could stay for 6 months, but he overstayed for more than 6 months, so what happened was that he got fake stamping done there through someone. After getting fake stamping done, when he came back to India, he was deported from the UK, so he was caught at the IGI airport, and then he was questioned,” Martin said.Police told a different story. They alleged Martin and an associate had arranged the boy’s trip under the pretence of a cricket tour, with money involved, and that Ajwa Sports Club, described as a bogus outfit, was used in the arrangement. There was even a suggestion of human trafficking or an illegal-immigration racket.None of it stood up in court.
Arrest, Tihar and a career quietly dismantled
Martin was arrested in Delhi and spent time in Tihar Jail while the case crawled through the system.It still hadn’t been resolved by 2016, when the Baroda Cricket Association named him Ranji Trophy coach, a decision that drew criticism given that the case was still pending.Away from the field, the damage was more direct. Martin says he lost his job with the Railways over the case and could never get a foothold with the BCCI. Two decades of uncertainty took their toll.“My name was not even in the FIR, but when the investigation took place, I was involved in this case because the name was big and I was an international cricketer, because of that. And after the case ended, this… now, after 22 years… during these 22 years, I was not getting any answers from the BCCI either; I lost my job in the railways. So I had a lot of stress because of this, but this judgment that has come now- I have got a clean chit; it will be a big settlement for my life and very... after 22 years, this… appeal I have received is a very big U-turn for my life,” he added.

The court case wasn’t the only thing testing him. In December 2018, Martin was badly injured in a road accident in Vadodara, with his lung and liver both damaged. He was put on a ventilator, spent nearly a month in intensive care, and for a while his condition was critical.Former teammates and administrators rallied to help cover his treatment.More than two decades after that tour to England, Martin’s legal ordeal has ended. It won’t undo the years he lost. But it gives him something he hadn’t had in a long while: a life after cricket that isn’t defined by a case still hanging over him.
