82-year-old Sinatra fan makes a 10,000-mile round trip over three years to fulfil a promise made to his late wife: ‘Before she died, she said, “Jimmy, you’d better do it…”’

Three years: that’s how long Jimmy Moir carried a promise he made to his wife, who was no longer there to see it through. Moir, 82, and his wife Gladys were married for 62 years before she died of cancer in 2023. During that half-century of companionship, the couple from Dundee shared a lifetime of dreams. But one in particular was impossible to dismiss: their trip to Los Angeles to visit Capitol Records, the place where their idol Frank Sinatra had once stood and sung into a microphone. So before she bid adieu, Gladys made him swear he’d make the journey alone if he had to. “I always wanted to go to Capitol Records – obviously with Gladys, but unfortunately she died in 2023. Before she died, she said, ‘Jimmy, you’d better do it while you can’,” Moir told the BBC.After Gladys passed away, Moir knew he had to fulfil the promise. What followed was a pilgrimage of sorts, which made the Scottish pensioner a celebrity on the other side of the Atlantic.

‘You’d better do it while you can’: 82-year-old fulfils late wife’s final wish

Jimmy Moir first met Gladys when he was 16. A year into dating, the couple got married. “I was lucky, I had love from a young age. Some people never find love… We got married when I was 17. From that day on, we were together for the next 62 years,” he told STV News.

He promised his dying wife he’d visit Sinatra’s studio. At 82, he finally did

It was Gladys who introduced Moir to Frank Sinatra’s music. Their love for the singer’s music only deepened over six decades together. They had wanted to visit Capitol Records in LA ever since. While their love for each other and Sinatra grew, Gladys was diagnosed with cancer. “I always wanted to go to Capitol Records, obviously with Gladys,” he told the British broadcaster. However, she passed away in 2023. Before her last breath, she had a dying wish. “She said, ‘Jimmy, you’d better do it while you can’,” Moir recalled. For Jimmy, keeping that promise was beyond sentimental; it was the only way he knew to stay tethered to her after she was gone. So he wrote to Capitol Records with his story. And the reply came: ‘Come’.

How a stranger on a plane changed everything

He lost his wife to cancer. Three years later, he travelled 10,000 miles for her

The day finally came. He was on his way to LA. What should have been a quiet, private pilgrimage turned into something else the moment Jimmy sat down next to Jena Goldsack on the flight to LA. The businesswoman, an influencer with a significant following, listened to his story over Scottish tablet, a homemade sweet he’d brought along. She saw the tenderness in it, the grief underneath, and posted about ‘Jimmy from the plane’ to her six million social media followers. “Flying to L.A. and losing it because there’s an 82-year-old Scottish man next to me who’s going on holiday alone for nine days as he told his wife before she got terminally ill that he’d do his lifelong dream of visiting Capitol Records because of how much he loves Frank Sinatra,” she wrote. Moir had no idea that a simple conversation would change the trajectory of his life. That post went viral, and messages poured in. People wanted to know more about the widower who was travelling 10,000 miles to fulfil the promise. Jimmy had thought he’d visit Capitol, maybe grab lunch at a Sinatra-themed restaurant, and fly home. Instead, the story caught fire.

    Inside Capitol Records

When he finally walked through the doors of Capitol Records, Jimmy wasn’t just an old man. He was a man whose late wife had sent him across the world, and the world had been watching. While he waited in reception, all he thought about was Gladys. “I just sat down and thought, ‘You know, Jimmy, the people that have walked through this door – the talent, musicians, singers, songwriters. I’m thinking of Nat King Cole, Sinatra, the Beach Boys, the Beatles. I really had to pinch myself. This moment was special,” he told the broadcaster.Soon, the security guards came up with a large black box. When they opened it, he saw the microphone. “The guy said to me: ‘This is Frank’s microphone’. I really filled up at that. I was overwhelmed to think he sang into that,” Moir recalled. While he was fulfilling the promise, the social media posts blew up.Someone reached out after seeing his story online and invited him to see one of Sinatra’s pianos. He visited the singer’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He ate where Sinatra ate. He also paid a visit to Paramount Studios. By the time his trip ended, he was in newspapers and on prime-time shows.Back in Dundee, his local social club now calls him ‘Mr Famous’. He surely enjoys the love and calls it “my 15 minutes of fame”. But for Moir, all this is just a bonus that he got for fulfilling his late wife’s promise. “She was amazing, very beautiful and a very caring person; she was a hugger, she loved to hug people.”When asked what Gladys would have made of it all, he adds, “She would be bewildered. But the family say she’d be very proud.”Now that he has made the trip, he is considering his next, after being invited to Hoboken, New Jersey, where Sinatra was born. After his three-year round trip to LA, Jimmy Moir has a message for everyone. “Age shouldn’t be a barrier. Follow your dreams,” the 82-year-old said.
