King Charles to host major AI leaders amid growing warnings over threat to humanity
King Charles III to host major AI leaders this week.

Britain’s King Charles III will host top leaders of the global artificial intelligence industry this week for crucial talks on whether shared principles are needed to govern the rapidly advancing technology. The meeting at Dumfries House, Scotland, comes as warnings over AI’s potential threat to humanity grow louder. Executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, along with the UK’s minister for AI, are expected to attend. The talks follow warnings from two Anthropic researchers that increasingly powerful AI systems could eventually lead to the extinction of the human race. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei also said on Saturday that AI companies should slow the pace of developing new models. The concerns come as AI systems are being used for increasingly sophisticated tasks, including by people carrying out criminal or harmful activities. Anthropic said in a threat intelligence report last week that its Claude models had been used in weapons development, cyber operations, surveillance and fraud.Finding a common approach among major AI powers could prove difficult. US President Donald Trump rejected calls for a slowdown in AI development on Sunday, while China’s state-backed Global Times newspaper accused Anthropic of using a “Cold War playbook” against Beijing.Buckingham Palace said the discussions would focus on how AI could be used to benefit society while protecting human dignity and contributing to the “flourishing of both people and the planet”.Charles has previously used his position to bring leaders together to discuss major global issues. As Prince of Wales and later as king, he has particularly focused on environmental challenges and the role of business in addressing them.Britain has taken a relatively light-touch approach to AI regulation, positioning itself closer to the United States than the European Union. The country is also home to a growing AI industry and is a leading European destination for AI funding and startups. Its AI Security Institute, established after the 2023 AI Safety Summit, has voluntary agreements with major technology companies that provide access to their models before deployment.
