Barber wears an AI suit to cut hair, Harsh Goenka says, 'Even barbers job may soon be at risk'

A haircut is usually a pretty simple affair. Sit in the chair, tell the barber what you want and let them get to work. But a video shared by industrialist Harsh Goenka has turned that familiar scene into something that looks straight out of a tech lab.The clip shows a barber cutting a customer’s hair while wearing a full motion-capture suit. The setup includes cameras, wires, sensors and tracking devices attached to the barber’s body and wrists.Despite all the equipment, the job itself looks completely ordinary. The barber continues to handle the scissors, apply products and work through different grooming techniques while the system records his movements. And that’s what caught people’s attention. The technology appears to be tracking the barber’s movements, including his hand positions, angles and techniques. Such detailed movement data can potentially be used to train AI systems to understand and replicate human actions.Sharing the video on X, Goenka wrote, “AI training going on in India! Even barber jobs may soon be at risk.”His comment quickly opened up a much bigger conversation about what AI could mean for traditional jobs.

Is AI coming for traditional jobs too?

The video may show a barber, but the questions it raises go well beyond a haircut. If machines can be trained by recording how skilled workers perform everyday tasks, could more professions eventually be affected? From barbers and chefs to technicians and other hands-on workers, technology is increasingly being used to capture how humans move and work. Some users also questioned what happens to the people whose movements and skills are being recorded. One person raised concerns about whether workers involved in such data-collection projects are actually being paid properly, while another suggested that such projects may need greater scrutiny to ensure workers aren’t being exploited.Another user called for a consortium or regulatory framework to oversee such practices, arguing that technology shouldn’t end up hurting the same workers whose skills help train it.

Not everyone is ready to give up the human touch

Then there were those who simply weren’t convinced that a robot could replace a good old-fashioned barber. Some users said they’d still choose a human barber, even if the haircut came with the occasional shaky hand, rather than trust a machine that could potentially go wrong after a software update. For now, the video is less about a robot actually cutting someone’s hair and more about how quickly AI is finding its way into jobs that once seemed completely untouched by it.The bigger question is whether technology will simply assist skilled workers or eventually learn enough from them to do the job itself.
