A nonprofit network of volunteer pilots based in Winter Park, Florida, has reached a major milestone after flying more than 12,000 rescued dogs and cats from overcrowded animal shelters to adoptive homes across the United States. Founded in 2010, the organization, called Animals Away, connects private pilots with animal shelters and rescue centers that are at or near capacity. Volunteer pilots donate their time, planes and aviation fuel to move vulnerable pets from overcrowded shelters in southern states to rescue groups in the Northeast and Midwest, where there is strong demand for adoptable animals. According to reports from WFTV Channel 9 News, the program began as a local effort to help Central Florida shelters dealing with ongoing space problems. Over 16 years, it grew into a multi-state air transport network that now moves dozens of animals each week.
Airborne relief for overcrowded shelters
Animal shelters across Florida often deal with serious overcrowding because of large stray populations, warm weather that supports year-round breeding and limited local adoption rates. When shelters run out of kennel space, they can face difficult decisions about euthanizing healthy animals that could otherwise be adopted. Animals Away helps by finding shelters with high numbers of incoming animals and matching them with rescue groups that have open space and people waiting to adopt. Instead of sending animals on long and stressful trips in vans, the network uses direct private flights that can reduce travel time from several days to just a few hours. Faster transport can lower stress and health risks for vulnerable animals, including young puppies, nursing mothers and older pets. According to information reported by WFTV Channel 9 News, pilots place animals in small carriers and crates inside light aircraft, keeping them secured and comfortable during the flight.
Pilot participation and operating costs
The entire network depends on private pilots who volunteer their time and pay many of their own flight costs, including fuel, landing fees and aircraft maintenance. Pilots involved in the program hold private or commercial licenses and use their own aircraft, ranging from single-engine Cessnas to twin-engine light planes. For many pilots, the rescue flights are also an opportunity to build flight hours while helping animals and their communities.In an interview with WFTV Channel 9 News, longtime volunteer pilot Steve Capontes described why he continues to take part in the program. “When you load up a plane full of animals that might not have had a chance, and you land at an airport where a rescue team is waiting with open arms, it makes every single flight worth it,” Capontes told WFTV Channel 9 News. “You know that within a week or two, every single one of those animals will be sleeping in a loving home.”
Emergency response and hurricane evacuations
The Winter Park organization also provides emergency air transport during hurricanes and other natural disasters, in addition to its regular weekly flights. When hurricanes threaten Florida, local shelters may need to move animals out before the storm to make room for pets that could become lost or displaced. Animals Away organizes emergency flights before storms arrive, helping clear shelters and move hundreds of animals away from danger within 48-hour periods. According to information published by the shelter network, volunteer pilots have flown repeated missions during major hurricane seasons, taking animals to partner shelters in states as far north as Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Vermont.
Expansion and partner networks
The program depends on close teamwork between ground crews, veterinary staff and flight coordinators. Before an animal can fly, it receives a health check, required vaccinations and a veterinary inspection certificate needed for interstate travel. Rescue partners at the destination then arrange ground transportation, taking the animals from airports to shelters or foster homes. According to figures published by Animals Away, the organization works with more than 50 receiving shelters and rescue groups across the eastern United States. Organizers in Winter Park continue to recruit licensed pilots and raise money for medical supplies, animal crates and veterinary certificates. The nonprofit also hopes to expand its flight routes and help rural shelters in neighboring southern states that face similar overcrowding problems.
