For 15 years, James Rodríguez was one of the first names that came to mind whenever Colombia walked onto a football pitch. The No. 10 shirt became closely associated with him, as did the captain’s armband, the spectacular goals and the expectations that followed him through three World Cups. On Tuesday, Rodríguez announced his international retirement in an emotional video, telling Colombian fans that it was time to close “one of the most important chapters” of his life. After 131 appearances for his country, the legendary No. 10 has brought that chapter to an end.
From a winning debut to Colombia’s record cap holder
Rodríguez’s international story began in October 2011, when he made his Colombia debut against Bolivia and immediately announced himself by scoring the winning goal.He was only beginning what would become a 15-year relationship with the national team, eventually playing at the 2014, 2018 and 2026 World Cups. Colombia did not qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar, meaning Rodríguez’s international career ultimately spanned three editions of football’s biggest competition despite the four-year absence. He is tied with Carlos Valderrama and Freddy Rincon for the most tournament appearances by a Colombian.The tournament that defined his reputation, however, came in Brazil in 2014.Rodríguez scored six goals in five matches to win the World Cup Golden Boot, including the extraordinary volley against Uruguay in the last 16 that became one of the defining goals of the tournament and later won the FIFA Puskás Award.Colombia reached the quarter-finals before losing to hosts Brazil, but Rodríguez’s performances had already changed the trajectory of his career. After the tournament, he earned his move from Monaco to Real Madrid, where he would play alongside some of the biggest names in world football.For Colombia, meanwhile, the No. 10 had become much more than a shirt number.Rodríguez eventually took on the responsibility of captaining his country as well, carrying the armband during a period in which Colombia remained one of South America’s strongest sides.He finished his international career as Colombia’s record cap holder, level with Carlos Valderrama and Freddy Rincón for the most tournament appearances by a Colombian, while his final figures stood at 131 appearances, 31 goals and 43 assists.
The captaincy, the tears and one more World Cup
Rodríguez’s relationship with Colombia was never defined solely by the highlights.In his retirement message, he acknowledged the difficult periods alongside the celebrations and explained what representing the national team had meant to him throughout his career.“Today, I want to talk to you from the heart,” James said on social media on Tuesday. “After many years, many games and joys, and difficult moments, it’s time to close one of the most important chapters in my life: my journey with the Colombian national team.”He described the responsibility attached to the shirt in equally personal terms.“Wearing this shirt was a dream, but also a huge responsibility,” James added. “Every time I entered a court, I understood that he didn’t play just for me. I played for my family, teammates, thousands of Colombians who dreamed of all of us.“I had the honor of wearing the No. 10 shirt and also the captain’s armband. I always tried to do it with respect, responsibility and understanding what it meant to represent Colombia. I had good days and very difficult ones, but I never stopped feeling proud of these colors.”His final appearance came on July 7, when Colombia faced Switzerland in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.The match finished 0-0 after extra time, before Switzerland won the penalty shootout 4-3, bringing Rodríguez’s fourth and final World Cup campaign to an end.It also meant his last match for Colombia ended without the fairytale finish that might have suited the player who had given the country one of its most memorable individual World Cup performances.There had been another significant chapter two years earlier.Rodríguez captained Colombia to the 2024 Copa América final, where Argentina won 1-0 after extra time. It was Colombia’s first appearance in the Copa América title match in 23 years, although Rodríguez ultimately finished his international career without a senior international trophy.
Why James Rodríguez decided to walk away
His announcement was direct, with Rodríguez making clear that his decision was not about distancing himself from Colombia but about bringing an important period of his life to a natural conclusion.The caption accompanying his retirement video said: “Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear and every dream we shared. Defending the colours of the Colombia national team was one of the greatest honours of my life.”He ended the message with the same sense of gratitude.“I’m leaving calmly because I gave everything. Thank you for every moment, thank you Colombia,” Rodríguez said.Rodríguez is now 35, and while his international career is finished, he has made clear that he is not finished with football.
Rodríguez’s club career continues in Colombia
Just last week, Rodríguez joined Atlético Nacional on a contract running through next June after leaving Minnesota United.The move takes him back to Colombian football for the first time since his teenage years at Envigado, where his professional career began, and gives the veteran midfielder an opportunity to continue playing in his home country after closing the door on international football.Atlético Nacional becomes the 14th club of a career that has taken Rodríguez through some of the biggest teams in Europe and North America, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Everton.His club honours include two Champions League titles and two LaLiga crowns, while his international career produced the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup, 31 goals, 43 assists and more appearances for Colombia than any other player.There will be no more World Cup nights in the yellow shirt, no further Copa América campaigns and no additional occasions for Rodríguez to walk out wearing Colombia’s No. 10 or captain’s armband.For a generation of Colombian supporters, those two symbols had become inseparable from the same player.Now Rodríguez will try to write the final pages of his playing career at Atlético Nacional, while the Colombia team begins the task of imagining its midfield and its No. 10 shirt without the player who occupied both for so long.
