They had a conversation that set off a chain of events and pulled James back from the edge.Within weeks, James received $17,000 in donations, a new apartment, and a second shot at a life that once seemed completely lost.
A chance encounter that changed everything
Jasper Steinmetz was walking along a path in Austin earlier this year. That’s when he spotted an unmistakable Indiana University athletic backpack. Steinmetz had recently graduated from IU himself. But the backpack was out of place. So, he decided to stop and ask the man carrying it about IU.“I saw the Indiana University athletic backpack, and since I had just graduated from Indiana, we had that commonality. And I figured, you know, why not talk to him?” Jasper Steinmetz told CBS News.
Former athlete on the streets
The conversation revealed more than a shared college. Steinmetz learned that the homeless man was Sampson James. He had the same Hoosier roots, the same starting point. James shared that he had been homeless for eight months. After returning home, Steinmetz searched James’s name online. That’s when he learned just how far the fall had been.Sampson James had been a standout athlete, recruited as one of the best in his class. He discovered that James was a four-star recruit out of Avon High School in Indiana. He had the talent scouts wanted, the grades that impressed coaches, and the kind of future that small-town kids dream about.“He was an amazing athlete, really a standout star,” Steinmetz said.In 2019, he arrived at Indiana University as a freshman running back, exactly where he was supposed to be. But football can sometimes be unforgiving. He suffered a serious knee injury that derailed his athletic career. When James thought the worst was over, he got another diagnosis: bipolar disorder. The combination was too much. James left Indiana University in 2023 without finishing his degree. And all his football dreams vanished with it.He eventually lost everything, hit rock bottom, and was living on the streets of Austin. With almost no one left to turn to, he ended up on the streets. And the red backpack was the only possession left.
How the backpack gave him a second life
Jasper Steinmetz noticed the backpack. He knew he had to help his fellow Hoosier. So he did. After meeting James, he set up a fundraiser online. The response was overwhelming. People wanted to help this man get his life back.The fundraiser raised $17,000 in donations. But Steinmetz had only begun. Leaving James homeless wasn’t an option. So he helped James secure an apartment.“We just prepaid a bunch of rent and got him everything that he needed for the apartment,” Steinmetz told the broadcaster.He wasn’t done yet. He wanted to make sure that James got all the support he needed to get back on track. So, Steinmetz joined James on that same trail again this week, this time looking at a brighter future.“Now that all these people donated and you got the apartment, they really want to see you succeed,” Steinmetz told James.James understood the weight of that expectation. He knew it came from a place of love. Strangers who genuinely cared about him.“Oh yeah, and I’m big on not letting them down,” James said.James is rebuilding his life now. He has a home. He has people rooting for him. For the first time in years, James isn’t just surviving. He’s allowed to want more. He has hopes.
