Quote of the day by Gaur Gopal Das (Photo: @gaurgopald/ X)

Gaur Gopal Das is an engineer turned monk, motivational speaker, and life coach. Over the years, he has gained popularity for his discourses and words of wisdom at major institutions and companies, as well as at the United Nations and the British Parliament, sharing everyday life advice with spiritual wisdom in a simple, relatable way.He beautifully discusses the idea that our lives today have been so surrounded by the chase for more, be it success, name, or fame. And somewhere in that chase, ambition quietly turns into a treadmill we can’t step off.We tell ourselves it’s for our family, for our future, for a life of comfort we’re building brick by brick. But we must ask ourselves: at what point does providing for a life replace living it?

We often speak about ambition, responsibility, and sacrifice as virtues. And they certainly are. There is nothing wrong with chasing our goals, wanting to grow or working hard to give our loved ones a better life. Fulfilling their needs, and perhaps even some of their wants, can be a deeply meaningful source of motivation. But somewhere along the way, we may forget that we have needs too. We have a life to live as well.Professional growth should not consistently come at the cost of our health. Providing for our family should not make us emotionally absent from them. Achieving more should not leave us with less peace, less joy and less time for everything that makes those achievements meaningful.Taking care of ourselves is not selfish. It allows us to remain present, resilient and capable of serving others more meaningfully.By all means, let us have the aspiration to grow and the desire to serve those we love. But let us also remember that our loved ones do not only need what we can provide for them. They need us too

    Gaur Gopal Das

    What does the quote mean

Gaur Gopal Das beautifully brings an idea to light: We often feel a particular kind of tiredness that has nothing to do with how many hours you’ve slept. It’s the tiredness of being needed everywhere except in your own life. We are present in meetings, deadlines, family dinners, festival visits, and somewhere in between, you disappear from your own list of priorities.Das doesn’t argue against being ambitious, having responsibility, or sacrificing; he calls them virtues instead. Wanting to grow, to provide, to give people you love a better life- none of that is wrong. The trouble starts when these virtues become the only measure of a life well lived, and everything else gets treated as optional. The core idea of his words is that professional growth shouldn’t cost our health. Providing for the family shouldn’t leave us emotionally unavailable to them. Reaching more shouldn’t mean feeling less, less peace, less joy, less time to actually enjoy what you worked for.

It’s a strange irony most working people know deep down

You build a life so full of achievement that you no longer have the bandwidth to feel good about it.Today, long hours of work are worn like proof of commitment. Being “busy” has replaced being present as a marker of success. It seems like people who work are always at work, with emails at 11 pm, messages during dinner, laptops that travel on vacations, and the line between “providing for family” and “being absent from family” gets blurrier every year.Gaur Gopal Das’s advice about self-care isn’t self-indulgence. He does not describe it as retreats and bubble baths, but as staying just enough to actually be there for the people you’re working so hard for. A parent who is financially generous but emotionally checked out isn’t fully present. A professional who has scaled every ladder but has nothing left for their own peace isn’t actually growth; they are just surviving, well-dressed.
