That quick, unsettling scurry of a small, silvery, fish-shaped insect darting away the moment you flip on the bathroom light late at night is a genuinely common experience, and once you spot one, it’s rarely a one-off. Silverfish have a habit of showing up specifically in two very particular spots around the house: bathrooms and wardrobes, and it’s never really random. These wingless, nocturnal insects are chasing very specific conditions in both places. Understanding exactly what draws them in is the real first step toward getting rid of them for good, rather than just squashing the one you happened to see.
Why bathrooms become their favourite hangout
Silverfish need genuinely high humidity to survive, typically somewhere between 75 and 95 percent, a level that ordinary bathrooms hit constantly thanks to hot showers, running taps, and poor ventilation that leaves steam lingering in the air far longer than most people realise. Beyond the moisture itself, bathrooms unintentionally offer a genuine buffet too; silverfish happily feed on toilet paper, soap residue, wallpaper paste, and even dead skin cells and hair, all things a bathroom naturally accumulates day after day without anyone thinking twice about it.
Why wardrobes are just as appealing
Wardrobes might seem like an odd second home for the same pest, but the appeal makes sense once you know their diet. Silverfish feed on starches and cellulose, which shows up in natural fibres like cotton, linen, and silk, the sizing and glue used in some fabrics, and any stored paper, cardboard boxes, or old magazines tucked away on a shelf. Combine that food source with the dark, undisturbed, rarely-opened nature of most wardrobes, and you’ve essentially built a five-star hiding spot for a nocturnal insect that actively avoids light.
Get moisture and humidity under control
This is, without question, the single most effective step you can take, since silverfish simply cannot survive in a genuinely dry environment. Run your bathroom’s exhaust fan for a good 20 minutes after every shower, and consider a dehumidifier for particularly damp bathrooms or wardrobes located in humid parts of the house. Fixing any leaking taps or pipes matters too, since even a small, hidden leak behind a wall or under a cabinet can keep humidity elevated for far longer than you’d expect just from looking at a dry-seeming surface.
Clear out the food sources they’re actually after
Since silverfish are drawn specifically to paper, cardboard, and natural fibres, cutting off that food supply makes a real difference. Swap cardboard storage boxes for sealed plastic containers, especially in bathrooms and wardrobes where humidity tends to linger, and avoid leaving stacks of old magazines, books, or paper clutter sitting untouched for months at a time. In wardrobes, occasionally airing out and inspecting stored clothing, particularly natural-fibre garments packed away for a season, helps you catch early activity before it becomes a genuine infestation.
Seal up the cracks and hiding spots
Silverfish need dark, tight spaces to hide during the day, and most homes have more of these than people realise: gaps behind baseboards, cracks in grout, small openings around plumbing fixtures. Sealing these with caulk cuts off both their hiding spots and, in many cases, their actual entry points into the room in the first place. It’s a bit of a tedious, detail-orientated job, but it genuinely complements the other two steps rather than working as a stand-alone fix on its own.
