Indian woman in US reveals what 9-to-5 work culture is really like

The meaning of a “9-to-5” job can look different from one workplace to another. While the phrase usually refers to a fixed schedule, the reality of when the workday actually ends can vary. An Instagram video by an Indian woman living in the US has sparked a conversation around this familiar part of working life.Nirmala shared what she has noticed about workplace timings in the US and compared it with her experience in India. Her video focused on what happens around the end of the working day.

‘No one works even a second past 5 pm’

Nirmala said employees start wrapping up around 10 minutes before the scheduled closing time and leave at 5 pm.“Friends, 9 to 5 here literally means 9 to 5. In India, even if our working hours are from 9 to 5, we often end up working a little longer, and employers sometimes expect us to stay beyond our scheduled hours. But here, 9 to 5 means exactly 9 to 5. No one works even a second past 5 pm. In fact, about 10 minutes before 5, people start packing up, and at exactly 5 pm, they leave. That’s simply how it works here.”She described this as one of the aspects of US work culture that she personally values.ID@undefined Caption not available.ID@undefined Caption not available.

    ‘5 pm means straight home’

In the caption of her Instagram post, Nirmala explained why the practice stands out to her.“5 pm means straight home. I really like this aspect of work culture in the US, where personal time is valued and working hours are respected.”Her post centred on the idea of keeping scheduled work hours separate from personal time.

    Users react to her observation

The video drew comments from people discussing the importance of work-life balance.“This is how work-life balance should be,” one user wrote.Another commented, “9 to 5 should actually mean 9 to 5.”Other users made similar points about respecting time outside work. “Personal time needs to be respected everywhere,” one person said.Another wrote, “Work ends, life begins.”Disclaimer: The information in this article is based on an Instagram video and comments shared by social media users.
