In his hometown, the Oscar-winning actor and his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, donated around 7.5 acres of land that was adjacent to their home to the Town of Westport. The celebrity duo made the move to prevent real estate development in the area, according to reports shared online by The Connecticut Post.Later in 1997, the town of Westport purchased around 30 acres of surrounding land for USD 3.75 million. They bought the land from Lillian Pose’s family, who were close to the Newmans and their neighbors. She also served as the former attorney in FDR’s presidential administration. Woodward also donated around 8 acres of his land to the town. Years later, the donated land combined to create the Newman-Poses Nature Preserve.

The idea to turn the land into a nature preserve came from the Oscar-winning actor; however, he sadly passed away in 2008, before the preserve could be officially established. In a report published by the Aspetuck Land Trust, the company that works on protecting open space in Westport, Weston, Fairfield, and Easton, it was revealed that Newman was highly supportive of the efforts to turn the large land area into a preserve.At the time, Jonathan Wagner, who was the chairman of the land acquisition committee, shared details on how Newman highly supported the organization’s conservation work. The actor also provided financial support for the cause, which included the acquisition of Trout Brook Valley in Weston.The Newman Poses Nature Preserve officially opened to the public on May 1, 2011, almost three years after the star passed away after fighting a battle with lung cancer. The 38-acres now sit around Bayberry Lane, Coleytown Road, and Easton Road in Westport. The preserve also includes woods, a meadow, wetlands, and the Aspetuck River.

After his passing, his daughters actively carried out his dream and worked with the organization that set the preserve up and now manages it as well. The name, which was meant to honor both Newman and Poses, was approved in 2010 during a Westport Representative Town Meeting.While most of the land is protected now, the company that manages the land has set up a separate recreational area for activities where people can walk around, spend some time, and even fish in some locations.The preserve has now become part of Newman’s legacy as an actor and an activist who stood by what he believed in most.
