For more than half a century, Jim Frecklington turned wood, metal, leather and gold into something increasingly rare: magnificent horse-drawn carriages built by hand. His workshop on Sydney’s northern beaches became the unlikely birthplace of vehicles destined for royal ceremonies, but his final project was also his most personal. Frecklington died at 76, leaving behind a three-tonne carriage for King Charles III that is now nearly complete, states an online report by ABC Information and Services. A final gift to the crown
Frecklington died in an aged care facility in Manly after a lengthy battle with cancer. Despite receiving a terminal diagnosis while the Commonwealth Royal Coach was still under construction, he continued working toward completing the decade-long project, adds the report. The carriage is now about 98 percent finished, according to members of his team, who are completing the final details, the report said. The enormous coach was financed in part by remortgaging Frecklington’s home and was designed as a tribute to more than 1,000 years of British monarchy and the Commonwealth.If we go by the online reports, its details reflect the extraordinary level of craftsmanship that went into the project. Hand-applied gold leaf covers much of the coach, while timber from Westminster Abbey forms part of its construction. From a pony cart to royal carriages
Frecklington’s fascination with coachmaking began when he was just eight years old. Growing up in Parkes, New South Wales, he struggled to ride his Shetland pony and found another solution which was of building a cart for the animal to pull. That childhood experiment eventually led him around the world. After graduating from The Scots College in Sydney in 1968, Frecklington spent time in the Arctic operating heavy equipment used in the construction of airstrips. He moved to England four years later and worked at Windsor Castle, caring for the Duke of Edinburgh’s four-in-hand horses, states ABC report. He later joined the Royal Mews in London, where he worked with Queen Elizabeth II’s ceremonial horses.
A legacy built on wheels
Frecklington’s connection to the British royal family continued after he returned to Australia. In 1977, he was invited to manage Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee Exhibition during its Australian tour and created a replica of Edward VII’s 1902 State Landau. His work soon reached an even grander scale. He built the Australian State Coach as Australia’s Bicentennial gift to Queen Elizabeth II in 1988 and later created the Diamond Jubilee State Coach for her 80th birthday in 2006. According to the report, the Diamond Jubilee coach eventually played a role in King Charles III’s coronation because the Commonwealth Royal Coach was not yet ready.
A craft that may never be repeated
Frecklington leaves behind three carriages associated with the British royal family and a reputation built on craftsmanship rather than mass production. His approach was famously hands-on, relying heavily on experience and an ability to visualize complex designs without conventional plans. Now, his final carriage is being completed by the craftsmen who worked alongside him. When finished, the Commonwealth Royal Coach will stand as more than a ceremonial vehicle.
