Quote of the day by Pablo Picasso: "We all know that Art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realise truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand. The artist must..."

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor who is popularly considered as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, known for founding Cubism, a movement that disintegrated objects into geometric shapes and multiple viewpoints, changing how the world understood painting.Over his long career, Picasso worked across many styles from his early Blue and Rose periods to Cubism, Neoclassicism, and surrealist-influenced work. He produced a huge body of work, including everything from paintings, sculptures, ceramics, prints, and stage designs, estimated at tens of thousands of pieces.Beyond his knack for making art, he also had outspoken views on creativity, often sharing them in interviews.Once, he spoke about a beautiful idea about how art deceives us and yet somehow tells us something true in the process.

We all know that Art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realise truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand. The artist must know the manner to convince others of the truthfulness of his lies

    Pablo Picasso

    What does the quote mean

On the surface level, Picasso’s words sound like a contradiction. How can a lie make us realize the truth? But Picasso wasn’t talking about lying in the daily sense, like cheating someone or hiding the truth. He framed this quote around art, and when we dig deeper, we realise that a painting is never the real thing. A portrait is not the person; a landscape on canvas is not the actual hills and sky. It is produced using paints, shapes, and colours arranged by a human hand. In that sense, every piece of art is a kind of fiction, a constructed version of reality.

But that construction is exactly what lets art reach something real

A photograph can capture a face, but a painting can capture what that face felt like to the artist; the beauty in art lies in the facts about how the sadness in someone’s eyes, the tension in a moment, changes the whole mood of an era. Picasso believed this emotional or symbolic truth was often more honest than a literal copy of reality. The “lie” of art, or the distortion, the exaggeration, the stylization, is the tool that gets us there. That is why he said the artist must know how to make people believe the lie. If the craft fails, the deeper emotions never land either.

Picasso’s words are more relevant than ever even today

We now live surrounded by constructed images, like filtered photos, edited videos, AI-generated art, perfectly posted social media photos. None of these are literal truth either. Yet, like Picasso’s paintings, they can still carry real feeling, real words, or real insight, depending on how honestly they’re made and what they’re trying to say.But it is important to realise that even today, the difference between manipulation and meaningful art often comes from the person’s perspective, whether the “lie” is used to deceive people for personal gain or to help them see something they couldn’t see otherwise.
