Assam is a beautiful Northeastern state known for its exotic wildlife and dense jungles. The state has a close relationship with elephants. But sometimes, Assam’s wildlife comes much closer to everyday life than expected. Recently, an unexpected encounter between these gentle giants and a famous Indian train made the headlines. The whole incident was captured in a video and shared on social media.In August, the Down Rajdhani Express was temporarily stopped at Hawaipur in Assam’s Hojai district after a herd of elephants began crossing the railway tracks. The train was halted at around kilometre 167/8, under the Lanka Range of the Nagaon South Division, only to allow the animals to move across safely. Forest officials acted quickly to keep the train and wildlife apart.For travellers, it is the kind of railway interruption that sounds almost cinematic. The Hawaipur-Lumding area is part of a landscape where elephant movement and railway infrastructure. A recent Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change assessment identifies the Lumding-Habaipur railway line as a vulnerable stretch near the Lumding Reserve Forest, which forms part of the Dhansiri-Lumding Elephant Reserve.The region serves as a main link between forests in and around Karbi Anglong and Nagaon. It’s an important place for elephant movement.The railway line has historically been a challenging zone for wildlife movement. But measures have been introduced to reduce the risk.Indian Railways says elephant corridors are incorporated into working timetables, while speed restrictions can be imposed on sensitive stretches.
