An overdue library magazine has returned to its original home in New Hampshire after more than 132 years. John Hanson, an 84-year-old man from Barrington, recently brought a September 1894 issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine back to the Concord Public Library. The publication had remained in his home for decades, although he said he had no idea how it came into his possession. His decision to return it followed the library’s introduction of a year-long fine freeze in September 2026. The initiative allowed him to avoid a potential $12,055 late fee, calculated from 48,220 overdue days. The unusual return surprised library staff and raised questions about the magazine’s journey through more than a century of history.
New Hampshire man discovers 1894 magazine in his home
Hanson, a Concord native, had kept the magazine at home for decades. According to New Hampshire Public Radio, the item was initially in his Boscawen home before he moved to Barrington in 2010. He said he had no clear recollection of how it came into his possession. His father was born and raised in Concord but did not have a library card, leaving the original borrower’s identity uncertain. Hanson speculated that he might have acquired it through a book pile or an advertisement sale.
Fine freeze encouraged overdue returns
The Concord Public Library introduced a fine freeze on September 1, 2026, to encourage patrons to return overdue materials without accumulating additional penalties. The programme was announced as a year-long initiative to examine the effects of operating as a fine-free library. Hanson learned about the policy through a newspaper article and decided it was an appropriate time to return the magazine.The library said the magazine was 48,220 days overdue. At a theoretical rate of 25 cents per day, the resulting fine would have amounted to $12,055. However, Hanson did not have to pay the amount because of the fine freeze.

The returned publication was an issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, a periodical that combined literature, history and current affairs. The magazine included period advertisements and material reflecting social concerns of the late 19th century. The Guardian reported that the issue also contained writings associated with authors such as Mark Twain and Henry James.The magazine’s original library markings included a bookplate and an instruction stating that it could be kept for one week. Its long absence has left library staff curious about the identity of the original borrower and the circumstances that led to its disappearance.
Library plans to preserve the historic return
The Concord Public Library does not plan to place the 1894 magazine back into regular circulation. Instead, staff said the issue could be preserved as part of the library’s historical collection or displayed in the Concord Room, where archival materials related to the city are kept. Its age, condition and connection to the library’s own history make it more than an ordinary overdue publication. After spending decades in private hands, the magazine could now serve as a physical record of the library’s past and of an era when such periodicals were routinely borrowed, read and returned. Its preservation would also allow future visitors to examine a publication that has survived for more than 130 years and has now returned to the institution that originally owned it.
