5 things you don’t need to have figured out in your 20s, 30s, or 40s |

5 things you don't need to have figured out in your 20s, 30s, or 40s
5 things you don’t need to have figured out in your 20s, 30s, or 40s

There is an invisible checklist that seems to appear as you grow older.By your 20s, you are expected to know what you want to do. By your 30s, you are supposed to be settled. By your 40s, there is often an assumption that you should have life completely under control. But real life is far less organised than that. You can be successful and still feel unsure. You can have a loving relationship and still have questions about yourself. You can look settled on the outside while quietly wondering whether you want something different.Maybe maturity is not about having every answer ready. Maybe it is about knowing which questions do not need immediate answers. Here are five of them.

    1. The career you will have forever

The first job you take does not have to become your life’s permanent direction. You might discover a new interest at 28, feel differently about your work at 34 or decide to start over at 41. Changing careers does not erase what you learned from the years before it.Work is one part of your life, not the entire definition of who you are.You are allowed to change your mind when your priorities change.

    2. Why your life looks different from someone else’s

Someone your age may be married, another may be travelling the world, while someone else may be starting their first business.Looking sideways can make your own life feel strangely inadequate, even when nothing is actually wrong with it.People arrive at different things at different times. A delayed milestone is not automatically a failed one.Your life does not become less meaningful because somebody else’s looks more settled.

    3. Your life’s grand purpose

There is enormous pressure to discover one big thing you were “meant” to do.But purpose does not always announce itself dramatically. For some people, it grows through their work. For others, it appears in relationships, creativity, family, service, faith or the simple decision to live with greater honesty. You do not need an impressive answer when someone asks what your purpose is.A meaningful life can be built through ordinary choices.

    4. Why every difficult thing happened

Some experiences leave behind questions that may never have satisfying answers. Why did that relationship end? Why did that opportunity disappear? Why did someone you trusted behave the way they did?It is natural to search for explanations, but there comes a point when understanding the past stops helping you move forward. You can accept that something hurt you without knowing exactly why it happened. Not every unanswered question needs to be solved before you can heal.

    5. The person you will always be

You are not required to remain loyal to every version of yourself. The person you were at 22 may have different priorities from the person you become at 35. Your friendships may change. Your ambitions may become quieter. Things you once wanted desperately may lose their appeal. That does not mean you have become lost.Sometimes, outgrowing an old version of yourself is simply a sign that you have been paying attention.Growing older does not mean reaching a final destination where everything suddenly makes sense. Some answers arrive through experience. Some arrive after mistakes. And some questions may remain open for years. That is not necessarily a failure to move forward.Sometimes, it is simply what being human looks like.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
