Something was very different at Rome’s Colosseum on Wednesday.Instead of the usual long queues and crowds of tourists, visitors found the gates closed.The reason was tragic. A 22-year-old worker had died after falling around 10 metres while working inside the ancient monument.Andrea Moretti, a specialist rope-access worker, was installing a new lighting system during an overnight shift on Tuesday when he fell, Italy’s Culture Ministry said.He was working high up inside the Colosseum when the accident happened.News of his death led to the rare decision to close the entire monument to visitors. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli called it a “tragic event” and offered his condolences to Moretti’s family.
Why did the Colosseum close?
The Colosseum is normally packed with visitors, with thousands of tourists passing through its gates every day.Initially, authorities planned to close only the upper section where the accident took place. But they later decided to shut the entire site.There was a practical reason for that too.By the time the decision was made, the first group of tourists had already entered the Colosseum. Authorities said stopping admissions immediately could have left a huge crowd outside the monument, creating further safety and public-order problems.The closure was extended through Thursday, September 24.For a place that is almost always open to tourists, the sight of the Colosseum sitting behind closed gates was unusual.The Colosseum Archaeological Park normally closes to the public only on January 1 and December 25, apart from exceptional closures and special arrangements.
