The clever styling trick behind Sara Ali Khan’s dramatic wide-leg trousers

Sara Ali Khan’s latest promotional look for Udta Teer, designed by Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, shows how a few simple styling choices can make a dramatic pair of trousers look polished and easy to wear. The actor paired high-waisted black wide-leg trousers with a crisp white shirt featuring a long, pointed detail at the front. The trousers had intricate embellishment around the waist and hip, while the rest of the outfit was kept fairly clean. It’s the kind of black-and-white look that seems simple at first. Look a little closer, though, and the proportions are doing most of the work.Wide-leg trousers can look incredibly chic, but getting the proportions right can be tricky. Too much volume in the wrong place and the outfit can quickly feel overwhelming. The trousers sit high on the waist before falling into a wide, fluid leg. That placement gives the lower half of the outfit a longer line instead of breaking it up with a low waist. The contrast with the shirt helps too. The white shirt has a structured feel around the shoulders and sleeves, while the trousers bring plenty of movement and volume below the waist. So, rather than trying to make wide-leg trousers less dramatic, the styling gives that volume a clear shape. The trousers aren’t plain black. The detailing is concentrated around the waist and upper hip, making that area the focal point without covering the entire pair in embellishment.

That keeps the trousers from competing with themselves. The eye gets the detail around the waist first, followed by the clean, uninterrupted fall of the wide legs. It’s a useful trick when wearing statement trousers. If the shape is already doing a lot, the detailing doesn’t necessarily need to be everywhere too.The shirt plays an equally important role.Instead of adding another bold colour, print or heavily embellished top, the designers chose a crisp white shirt. Its long pointed front detail gives the upper half some drama, but it doesn’t take attention away from the trousers. The result is a fairly clear visual balance: the white shirt keeps the top half fresh and clean, while the high waist and wide legs give the bottom half structure and movement. And that’s perhaps the easiest takeaway from Sara’s look. Wide-leg trousers don’t always need to be toned down. Sometimes, giving them a defined waist and pairing them with a clean, structured top is enough to make the whole outfit come together.
