5,500 Dorper sheep worth more than $1.7 million stolen from Queensland property; police seek information months later

On a rural property outside Blackall, the disappearance of livestock has left police trying to trace the movement of an unusually large flock. More than 5,500 Dorper sheep, including ewes and rams, were reported stolen earlier this year in Queensland. According to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC News), the animals are estimated to be worth more than $1.7 million, making the reported loss a substantial one for the property involved. Police say the sheep were taken between February and May 2026 from land along the Blackall-Isisford Road. Several months after the reported thefts, detectives are still seeking information from people who may have noticed unusual stock movements or transport activity during that period.

5,500 Dorper sheep stolen in Queensland livestock theft

Reportedly, the stolen animals are Dorper sheep, a breed widely used for meat production and recognised for its ability to cope with hot, dry conditions. The flock included both ewes and rams, with police estimating that about 5,500 animals were taken. The reported value of the flock is more than $1.7 million. The sheep were not unmarked. Queensland Police said the animals carried white National Livestock Identification System tags, which are used to identify livestock and record their movements through the agricultural supply chain.

Queensland sheep thefts stretched across three months

The timeframe is one of the key features of the investigation. Police say the thefts occurred between February and May this year rather than on a single identified day.The property is located outside Blackall on the Blackall-Isisford Road, in central-western Queensland. The area is part of a large pastoral region where properties can cover extensive distances and livestock transport is a routine part of agricultural operations. That geography can make stock theft cases difficult to piece together. A flock can be moved across different properties, roads, yards, saleyards and transport networks, potentially creating a trail that stretches well beyond the place where the animals were originally kept.

Police appeal for sightings of 5,500 missing Dorper sheep

Detectives from Queensland Police’s Rural and Stock Crime Squad are now asking the public to report sightings of Dorper sheep that could match the description of the missing animals.Investigators are also interested in reports of livestock transport activity or other unusual behaviour around the property and surrounding area during the period in which the sheep disappeared. Information does not necessarily have to come from someone who directly witnessed the theft.People working in the livestock industry may have encountered relevant details without initially knowing that the animals were connected to a police investigation. Transport operators, producers and others involved in the movement of stock could have records or observations that help detectives establish where the flock went.

Queensland police use NLIS tags to trace missing livestock

As reported by ABC News, the white NLIS tags fitted to the sheep provide an important identifying feature. The National Livestock Identification System is Australia’s national framework for identifying livestock and recording certain movements between properties and other locations. For police investigating missing stock, those records can form part of a broader picture. Livestock may pass through several points in the supply chain, and movement information can help establish where animals were recorded. The tags also give members of the public and people working with livestock something specific to look for. Police are asking anyone who has seen a flock of Dorper sheep matching the description to come forward.

$1.7 million sheep loss puts rural stock theft in focus

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Elliot of the Rural and Stock Crime Squad said livestock theft remained a concern for police in rural Queensland. He said such offences can create significant financial losses for farming businesses, particularly when large numbers of animals are involved. In this case, the reported value of the missing flock exceeds $1.7 million. The investigation also highlights the geographical challenges associated with rural stock crime. Police said investigations can cover large areas and involve producers, saleyards, transport operators and other industry participants.
